'You and I will probably not be alive to see it in action' [GANDHI MAHATMA]: (1869-1948) Indian Political and Spiritual Leader during the Indian Independence Movement. T.L.S., M. K. Gandhi (secretarial signature, possibly in the hand of a family member), one page, 8vo, Noakhali, 29th November 1946, to 'Dear Friend'. Gandhi states that he has neglected his correspondent's question for a long time ('You know the reason why') although remarks that he has their letter to Pyarelalji before him, commenting 'Of course conversions will so far as I know continue under swaraj, but there would be no State favouritism as there has been during the British regime. Let us hope that under swaraj there will be no one man rule but the people's. You and I will probably not be alive to see it in action'. A letter of interesting content for its references to self-rule, and the precognition of his death which was to tragically occur by assassination just over a year after the date of the present letter. VG The present letter was written in the aftermath of the communal riots at Noakhali where Gandhi stayed for around four months motivating the people towards his peaceful coexistence and non-violence philosophy.

Born October 1892. Brought to South Africa by father 1896. Returned to India 1901. Came back to South Africa 1904. Took active part in the Passive Resistance movement led by father against racially discriminatory laws enacted against Indians by the Government of the Union of South Africa. Went to prison several times until settlement was arrived at in 1914.…Learnt hand spinning & hand weaving in pursuance of the movement led by father to revive village industries in India for the emancipation of the starving millions. In 1916 was sent by father to South Africa to help in conducting “Indian Opinion” - paper founded by father in 1904 for the social, moral, educational and political advancement of Indians and for promoting better understanding between Indians, Europeans and other nationalities in South Africa….Took active part in Civil Disobedience movement led by father against the Salt Tax in India. Spent nine months in prison….Took active part in Passive Resistance against Asiatic Land Tenure Act, enacted by the Government of the Union of South Africa, with a view to humiliating Indians as a race by segregating them and ruining them politically, socially and economically….Have never been to school. What knowledge I possess I have gained from experience. I am on my way to the World Pacifist meeting to be held in India in December and promoted by those who believe in bringing peace to the world by following the principles of non-violence and opposing all forces which tend to promote violence’. A statement with remarkable content, not least for its references to Mahatma Gandhi. Some extremely minor wrinkling and very light age wear, about VG

Clifford announces 'I can't promise to know all about the Comet book in less than two months' and continues 'the author is rather mad and a paradoxer although distinctly of great power and consideration; now this is a phenomenon which requires to be treated with great accuracy and care'. Clifford further seemingly refers to some other book reviews he has been asked to undertake, 'I want however to do Bain's little book in the international series Mind & Body - if you have not given it to someone; and (this very particularly) Jevons on the Principles of Science, when it comes out. (Not that these require less accuracy & care, as I see you observing, but that they are on subjects which I have already studied.)' A few very small pinholes to the centre of the pages, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
