Aquinas (Thomas) SUPER QUARTO LIBRO SENTENTIARUM. (1481) Small folio (295 x 205 mm) 310 leaves including first blank with manuscript title, (a-z10, A-H10 (a1 blank, a2r text, H2v, printer`s device printed in red, H3r tabula, H10r quire register, H10v blank), 56 lines and headline, double column, initial spaces, unrubricated, printed in two columns in gothic type. Unbound but sewn to bands, the first blank is separated and the final gathering is nearly detached, there are stains, ink perhaps, penetrating the page, at the bottom of leaves e4, f4, f(8), i4, i(6), k2-k(9), m3, n2,n3, o1, o(6)-o(8), o(10),p1,p2. There is a separate blot on the text of leaf and a spot on the lower margin of F1 verso. There is also some, generally faint, water staining evident in the pages of the Tabula and Register, it has not affected the text or the written notes. There is a single narrow wormhole present in the lower margins of folios A(10) to D5, well clear of the printed areas.The final leaf has a fragment torn from the upper corner possibly as the result of an attempted repair and the margin is discoloured. There are manuscript notations in margin of the tabula. There is a solitary attempt at a pen and ink decorative capital on leaf b2. Page edges dyed light red. Overall a crisp copy. The Sententiae - Sentences of Peter Lombard was the standard theological reference work of its time. And Sentences were the considered judgments and opinions of experts on questions of faith and dogma, which Lombard had collected and classified in four parts – the fourth dealing with the sacraments. The individual topics - in each part were called and numbered as so many distinctions. This work was Aquinas` thesis for his master`s degree in theology, a discussion and evaluation of earlier opinions. However, this superbly researched, illustrated and produced 2002 history describes how the V O C gave a monopoly of religious services to the N G K`s predecessor, the `Nederlands Hervormde of Gereformeerde Kerk`. Photographic paper-board covers, bronze illustrated endpapers and 252 pp of colour-illustrated text, appendixes and index printed on art paper. Unmarked. Kraus, Hans Peter The Cradle of Printing Part 2 [H P Kraus Catalogue 131; 1971] 355 x 250 The founder of the famous New York antiquarian bookseller H P Kraus was born in Austria in 1907. He died in 1988, but the firm he founded closed only recently, after publishing 204 catalogues. One of the most famous of these was Kraus`s own Catalogue 131, which lists 41 fifteenth century printed books from 25 presses in today`s Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, England and the Netherlands - some of the books unique and others sought-after examples of a few surviving copies. The oldest item in the catalogue was `the largest paper copy of the Gutenberg Bible` (c 1455) - the emphasis being on `paper` as vellum copies were usually larger. In chronological order, other books were Ptolemy’s first atlas (1462), Caxton’s Reynard the Fox (1481), Dante’s La Commedia (1481), The Book of Hawking (1486; `the first English sporting book`), Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (1491), and Boccaccio`s Decameron (1492). Each item is illustrated and described over four pages. One or more colour plates illustrate a dozen of the books, while there are also 86 halftones and line-cuts. In a `personal postscript`, H P K, as he was known in the world`s antiquarian book trade, wrote: `Never before in this 20th century has so formidable an assemblage of great printed books been displayed and offered for sale in a catalogue; perhaps it never can be done again.` The binding is in blue silk, with a title label on the upper panel and the title gilt-embossed on the spine. The viii + 171 pp of illustrated and plates are printed on art paper. This copy is unmarked and includes the additional pasted-in plate showing one of the manuscript catchwords in the lower margin of the [Shuckburgh] Gutenberg Bible and missing in smaller (i e shorter) copies This copy is in exceptionally good condition.
