Joseph Knibb, Oxford, an extremely rare trade token, circa 1668, the obverse with a Roman numeral chapter ring and I K either side of a single hand to the centre, the reverse inscribed Joseph Knibb Clockmaker in Oxon diameter approx. 15mm. Joseph Knibb moved to Oxford circa 1662 after completing his apprentiship to Samuel Knibb (who moved to London). Joseph's presence in Oxford was not welcomed by the local trade and it was not until 1668, upon payment of a fine, that he was allowed to continue unhindered. It is probable that the current lot was produced at around this time to both serve as a temporary form of currency (would be redeemed to the value of a farthing) and as a form of advertising. Joseph moved to London in 1670 where he is thought to have taken on Samuels business who died around that time. Provenance: The Workshop of John Hooper. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports.
