Lot 45

Atelier of JAN BRUEGHEL I (Brussels, 1568 - Antwerp, 1625)"Landscape with Carriages and Animals.Oil on copper.Attached export licence.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70's between London and Madrid.Measurements: 23 x 33 cm.In this work we can see a wide landscape built on a solid structure skilfully resolved, as it combines in balance the diagonals and the horizontal ones, enhanced by the play of light, to firmly establish the spatial construction. It depicts figures on horseback, a group of characters led by a feudal lord and his servants. The skilful composition, as well as the manner of working the treetops and other formal details, allow us to relate this work to the tradition of the Flemish school. The artist works with a quick, agile technique, with small touches of colour that melt into our retina. This characteristic brings us closer to the circle or workshop of Jan Brueghel "the Elder", who portrayed this type of scene on several occasions, as reflected in a work belonging to the collection of the Hermitage Museum (inv./cat.nr 2246) and the work "Forest Landscape with Travellers", Auctioned at Christie's in 1998, published in K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Keulen 1979, p. 596, nr. 233, whose themes and compositions are very similar to the present work. The consequences of the political emancipation of religion and the economic prosperity of the liberal bourgeoisie were most evident in the painting of the Low Landscape school. As a result, various painters developed themes such as portraiture and landscape, moving away from devotional subjects. Born into an illustrious family of painters, Jan Brueghel, also known as "de Velours" or "The Old Man", was the son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and grandson of Pieter Coecke and Mayken Verhulst who, according to classical historiography, was his first teacher following the death of his father when he was only a child. His formal training was under the tutelage of Pieter Goetkind and although he was strongly influenced and attracted by his father's work, he developed his own highly personal style. Jan Brueghel the Elder was in turn the father of Jan Brueghel the Younger, his pupil and collaborator. His exquisite pictorial technique earned him the nickname "de Velours", i.e. "of velvet", as well as "of the Flowers" or "of Paradise" for some of the recurring themes in his works. Throughout his career he worked in collaboration with other artists and directed an important workshop, with numerous disciples and followers who continued his artistic formulas throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Although trained in Flemish surroundings, in 1590 he travelled to Italy, visiting Naples, Rome and Milan, where he met Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who became his patron and admirer until his death. In 1596 he settled in Antwerp, where he spent the rest of his career. Throughout his life he achieved great professional success and numerous distinctions, as well as the favour of important people. In 1601 he was appointed dean of the Guild of Saint Luke. In 1604, following a stay in Prague, he came into contact with the Archdukes Albert and Elisabeth Clara Eugenia, who expressed their admiration for him. Brueghel's style is based on the 16th-century Flemish tradition: the influence of the great landscape painters such as Patinir, Met de Bles, Cornelis van Dalem and his own father is evident in his late 16th-century works. In the first decades of the following century, however, his landscapes were transformed: horizontal lines began to dominate the compositions, which were stripped of the picturesque elements so dear to his father's taste and became more realistic views, in landscapes dominated by plains, less wooded and imaginary.

1990 Fiat X1/9 Gran Finale Transmission: manualMileage:16800The car was originally sold to its first registered keeper in Blackwater, Cornwall who only used the car in dry weather. When they passed away,  the ownership was transferred to his solicitors who never touched or moved the car. It was eventually sold in 2009 and still presented in showroom condition having covered a mere 6,000 miles. Today the Fiat has covered circa 16,800 miles and remains in very good condition with the original Mica Blue paintwork. The underneath is very good and fully Waxoiled. The engine was professionally rebuilt in 2015 at 13,960 miles following a head gasket blow. Other works included the block and head being professionally skimmed, rebored with oversize forged pistons fitted raising the cc to 1518, lightened and balanced bottom end, polished crankshaft, polished cylinder head ports, balanced flywheel, new water pump, new oil pump, new alternator, all cooling hoses replaced, fuel lines replaced, Denso Iridium spark plugs, K&N air filter, engine block blasted and painted. The radiator was re-cored with twin Kenlowe fans and additional manual switch in the cabin. A Lumenition electronic ignition was fitted along with stainless steel brake hoses and the carbs were rebuilt with an original Weber kit. The seats are in excellent condition and look as fresh as when they came out of the factory. This Fiat comes complete with an extensive history file including the original owner’s handbook and brochure, old MoT test certificates and full service and maintenance records. The vendor reports that the Fiat drives as you would expect with the engine, gearbox, suspension, steering and brakes all working as they should. Fitted with the original Grundig radio cassette and offered with a tailored quality indoor car cover, this is a very well-presented Fiat X1/9 and is possibly the best example on the market today.

Lot 203

1997 Caterham Super 7 ‘40th Anniversary’ Transmission: manualMileage:6247“There is little doubt that these cars are, pound-for-pound, the most fun you can have with your clothes on.†This hackneyed phrase is understandably well used for the simple reason that it is true. This writer has built them, owned them, driven them and raced them, none particularly well but smiles, oh yes. They also occupy their own spot in motoring history, not only for their relationship with ‘The Prisoner’ tv series, their wheels reflected here and shod in Michelin Pilot 195/50 R15 tyres, but also with no significant pause in production since 1957.But some are more collectable than others and, after 40 exciting years, it was time to celebrate. This special edition, including the original owner’s manual, fully stamped service manual (including recent cambelt change), was offered to just 67 lucky customers with cars all painted in a distinctive ruby pearlescent paint with a silver bonnet stripe and black coachline to give the Anniversary 7 a unique finish including a dash-mounted plaque detailing each car. Engines and general specification vary of course, this example carries the powerful Rover K-Series fuel-injected 1.6 litre engine mated to a five-speed gearbox and pushing out 115bhp at 6,000rpm. Impressive when the car weighs so little. Also included is the original order, the original invoices including all the extra’s such as the Supersport Package, stanchion mounted mirrors, wind deflectors, external 4-1 race exhaust, quick-release leather steering wheel, four-point safety harnesses, wind deflector package and bespoke tonneau cover. Performance and exclusivity, a heady cocktail.
