The interior lid shows two drilled single holes measuring just under 1mm each, both to right and left. The reason for these holes cannot be determined.The burgundy leather cloth covered fitted case is in good condition.

JAN STEEN(1626 Leiden 1679)Flusslandschaft mit fröhlicher Gesellschaft.Öl auf Leinwand.81 × 100 cm.Provenienz:- Auktion Philippus van der Schley, Amsterdam, 14.–15.8.1793, Los 116 (fl. 34 an Yver).- Auktion Christie's, ca. 1988. - Schweizer Privatbesitz.Literatur:Cornelis Hofstede de Groot: Beschreibendes und kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, Esslingen 1907, Addendum RKD Archiv, Nr. 882bb (als Jan Steen).Dieses Gemälde wurde kürzlich in einer Schweizer Privatsammlung entdeckt und war Wouter Kloek bislang unbekannt. Willem van de Watering hatte sich bereits 1988 zu dem Gemälde geäussert und vermerkt, dass es im Frühwerk Jan Steens entstanden ist und den Einfluss seines Schwiegervaters und wohl auch Lehrmeisters Jan van Goyen (1596–1656) aufweist. Wouter Kloek schliesst sich dieser Meinung nach Prüfung von Fotografien an und vermutet eine Datierung um 1653, wofür wir ihm danken. Der Bildaufbau mit der Figurenstaffage im Vordergrund vor der Landschaft findet sich in einem vergleichbaren Gemälde Jan Steens aus den frühen 1650er-Jahren wieder (siehe Ausst.-Kat. Jan Steen: Maler und Erzähler, hrsg. von H. Perry Chapman, Wouter Th. Kloek und Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., Stuttgart, Zürich 1996, S. 102, Abb. 2). Ferner vergleicht Ellis Dullaart, vom RKD, Den Haag die Vegetation mit dem um 1650 zu datierenden und von Jan Steen signierten Landschaftsgemälde, heute in einer Privatsammlung (RKD 104886), wofür wir ihr danken.Jan Steen, der 1648 als eingetragenes Mitglied der St. Lukasgilde dokumentiert ist, genoss eine umfassende Ausbildung bei verschiedenen bedeutenden Künstlern seiner Zeit. Neben dem Handwerk des Brauers, welches er von seinem Vater und seinem Onkel erlernt hatte, setzte die Mitgliedschaft der St. Lukas Gilde voraus, dass der Künstler sein Handwerk bei anderen Meistern zu erlernen hatte. So zeugen seine frühen Winterlandschaften von Einflüssen aus dem Atelier Adrian und Isaac van Ostade (1610–1685 und 1621–1649). Ebenso zählte Jan van Goyen zu jenen Künstlern, mit denen Jan Steen eng zusammenarbeitete und dessen Tochter Margriet er im Jahr 1649 heiratete.Das Gemälde ist im RKD, Den Haag, als ein eigenhändiges Werk von Jan Steen archiviert.

HENDRICK GOLTZIUS (UMKREIS)(Brüggen 1558 - 1617 Haarlem)Junge Frau mit geschlossenen Augen, den Kopf auf einen Arm abgestützt. Wohl Porträt der Sophia Goltzius.Feder in Braun.16,1 x 18,3 cm.Holm Bevers, dem wir für seine Hilfestellung bei der Zuordnung der Zeichnung danken, hat auf die grosse Ähnlichkeit der Dargestellten mit der Metallstiftzeichnung 'Lesende Frau (1591)' von Hendrick Goltzius hingewiesen, die im Berliner Kupferstich-Kabinett aufbewahrt wird. Nach alter Tradition und Überlieferung soll es sich dabei um die Schwester des Künstlers Sophia handeln (Reznicek 1961, K 347). Sie ist wohl auch dargestellt auf den Zeichnungen (Reznicek K 358 und K 373). Gut vergleichbar sind die leicht geschwungenen Lippen sowie die Nase. Auch nach Haltung und Gesichtsausdruck haben die beiden Frauen etwas sehr Verwandtes. Stilistisch steht die Zeichnung dem Werk von Hendrik Goltzius nahe, weisst aber in einigen Partien wie z.B. der Gestaltung der Wangenpartie auch Unterschiede auf. Ob es sich um ein Werk des Goltzius-Kreises oder einer alten Kopie nach einem alten Original handelt, muss vorerst offen bleiben.

The present work is Hanway's account of his journey to Astrabad and his return. The trip was arduous; Hanway had his goods seized before being partially restored to him, he also suffered attacks from pirates, illness and long stints in quarantine.
