A 'DEER AND HORSE' CARNELIAN SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTYChina, 19th century. Well carved from a pebble in high relief to depict to one side a spotted stag with its head raised toward the pine tree above, and to the other, a horse with one leg raised and tethered to a pine tree. The smoothly polished translucent stone is of a spectacular deep-red color with darker shadings cleverly utilized by the lapidary to highlight certain aspects of the scene.Provenance: Richwood Fine Art, Wigan, United Kingdom. From a private collection in Pennsylvania, USA, acquired from the above. The collection was assembled over a period of 30 years, specializing primarily in glass and hardstone snuff bottles. Richwood Fine Art is an English company run by Keith Richards and Ken Hailwood, offering an eclectic range of paintings, works of art, antiques, and antiquities, with over 40 years of collective experience. The Records of the Grand Historian tell a story where the powerful eunuch and chancellor Zhao Gao (d. 207 BC), in an attempt to control the Qin government, devised a loyalty test for court officials using a deer and horse: “Zhao Gao was contemplating treason but was afraid the other officials would not heed his commands, so he decided to test them first. He brought a deer and presented it to the Emperor but called it a horse. The Emperor laughed and said, "Is the chancellor perhaps mistaken, calling a deer a horse?" Then the Emperor questioned those around him. Some remained silent, while some, hoping to ingratiate themselves with Zhao Gao, said it was a horse, and others said it was a deer. Zhao Gao secretly arranged for all those who said it was a deer to be brought before the law and had them executed instantly. Thereafter the officials were all terrified of Zhao Gao. AN EXTREMELY RARE CLOISONNE ENAMEL QUADRILOBED BOX AND COVER, QIANLONG FIVE-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Supported on a flaring foot, the cover decorated with a central blossom encircled by four lotus flowers issuing meandering vines, the foot with further lotus and vines above a band of floral sprays, all above a turquoise ground, the interior, base, and rims in gilt. The recessed base incised with a five-character mark Qianlong nianzhi xuan and of the period.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. An important part of this collection was on permanent loan and exhibited over several decades at the Asia-Africa Museum in Geneva. The interior of the cover with three old labels, '18', 'Signe Kun-Lung Imperial', and 'Geneve Art Ancien Chine & Extro-Orient. 2762 TFA', and a lacquered inventory number 'AMA-2762/2'. The interior of the bowl with three old labels, 'Signe Kung Lung Imperial', 'K. Ming 1736-95', and 'Asia-Africa Museum Geneve', and lacquered with an inventory number 'AMA-2762/2'. Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne: The Pierre Uldry Collection, New York, 1989, pp. 74-79.The form of this four-lobed box supported by a broad foot rim directly references the crabapple (haitang), which could be combined with other emblems to create auspicious rebuses. Its second character, 'tang', is homophonous with the character for 'hall' and, by extension, 'the family home'. The compressed body raised on three legs with flat, partially open backs, each leg positioned below a notched flange centering pairs of stylized confronting dragons, the flat everted rim undecorated. A SMALL ROBIN'S EGG GLAZED 'ARCHAISTIC' BASIN, 18TH CENTURYChina. The vessel of flattened circular form, the exterior finely molded with mask handles suspending mock rings, framed by recessed bands below an incurved rim and short foot, covered overall with an opaque turquoise glaze densely mottled in bright and dark blue save for the broad unglazed foot rim encircling the countersunk base.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. An important part of this collection was on permanent loan and exhibited over several decades at the Asia-Africa Museum in Geneva. The base lacquered with an old inventory number, 'AMA-3081', and further with two old labels, '3081' and 'Art Ancien de Chine & Extrême-Orient Geneve. 4237/2. K. Lung 1736' Condition: Good condition with some wear and expected traces of use, the interior with light surface scratches, tiny glaze recesses. One side with a thin, barely visible hairline.Weight: 170.4 g Dimensions: Width 10 cm (at the widest points)As early as the Song dynasty, the Imperial court was fascinated with archaic objects and many wares were produced in imitation of ancient forms. The shape of the present censer, although flattened, is reminiscent of bronze containers known as lian, which were among the ritual implements aimed to present food and drink offerings to the ancestors during the Han dynasty. As such, the present censer may not only be emulating the bronze prototype, but also the ceramic form of the Northern Song dynasty, as exemplified by a Ruyao tripod incense burner from the Qing Court collection, illustrated in Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (I): The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 2, no. 1.The 'Robin's egg' glaze represents a significant technical innovation of the Yongzheng period (1723-35) attributable to Tang Ying (1682-1756), the greatest porcelain superintendent in Chinese history. The Yongzheng Emperor, who initiated many revivals of earlier ceramic techniques, was particularly enamored with the variegated Jun glazes of the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. In order to have the glazes recreated or imitated, Tang Ying sent his trusted assistant from the imperial kilns in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, on study trips to the Jun region in Henan province to learn from the local potters and even went as far as having ceramic raw materials mined in the Jun area transported over thousands of kilometers to Jingdezhen. Among the many types of glazes derived from those efforts are mottled purple ones such as the flambe variety, and mottled turquoise ones such as 'robin's egg', which Tang Ying termed Lu Jun or Oven Jun, i.e., a Jun glaze fired in low-temperature ovens instead of high-temperature kilns (see Jingdezhen Institute of Ceramic Archaeology et al, The Cultures of Porcelain Superintendents and Jingdezhen, conference volume, Nanchang, 2011). The 'robin's egg' glaze is mentioned on a stele in Jingdezhen, inscribed by Tang Ying, as one of the major types of ceramics that he succeeded in firing and proposed as suitable for regular delivery to the Imperial court. A BLUE AND WHITE GINGER JAR AND COVER, TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, CHINA, C. 1643-1645Of ovoid form, finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with shaped panels enclosing floral sprays and butterflies against an ice-crack ground with scrolling leafy lotus sprays, below a band of pendent drops of alternating size, the cylindrical cover with a broad band of precious objects to the sides and leafy lotus sprays to the flat top, all against ice-crack grounds and divided by line borders.Provenance: Michael Hatcher, recovered from the 'Hatcher wreck' in 1983. Christie's Amsterdam, 14 March 1984. Felix Tikotin, acquired from the above and thence by descent. The base with an old label, 'The Hatcher Collection. Christie's Amsterdam. 14-03-1984'. Michael Hatcher (b. 1940) is a British explorer and marine salvor who specialized in salvage work in the South China Sea. In 1981 he was involved in investigating the wreck of the Dutch submarine K XVII. He is especially known for his recovery of large quantities of Chinese porcelain from the VOC ship Geldermalsen (known as the 'Nanking cargo') which was sold at auction by Christie's in Amsterdam in 1986. Previously, he had discovered another ship in the South China Sea, which became known as the 'Hatcher wreck'. A part of the cargo salvaged in this wreck was sold at Christie's Amsterdam in March 1984, including the present lot. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including kiln grit to the base, the mouth rim with a small smoothened area, probably inherent to manufacture. The exterior with surface alteration consistent with objects from maritime salvage.Weight: 2,896 g Dimensions: Height 30 cmThe present ginger jar was recovered among some 25,000 vessels found on the wreck of an unidentified Asian ship in the South China Sea. This ship is known as the 'Hatcher wreck' after Captain Michael Hatcher who discovered her in 1983. There is no written record testifying to the exact year of her sinking but the covers of two oviform jars inscribed in underglaze blue with a cyclical date corresponding to 1643 make fairly precise dating of the wreck possible. The cargo primarily consisted of two types of blue-and-white porcelain made at Jingdezhen at the end of the Ming dynasty - late variations of 'kraak' ware and examples of a 'transitional' style characterized by landscape motifs and naturalistic plants and birds. The ship may have been on its way to Indonesia, carrying also spices, silk and other commodities for sale to the Dutch whose East India Company had offices in Batavia (modern Jakarta). Chinese junks sailing to Batavia or Bantam varied in size from 200 to 800 tons. A RARE AND MASSIVE CEREMONIAL SLIT DRUM, GARAMUT, SEPIK RIVER REGION OR LOWER RAMUTPublished: Alex Bortignon, Social Rite and Personal Delight, Perth, 1980, page 66.Papua New Guinea, Kadovar, 19th to early 20th century. The long, cylindrical drum well carved to the sides in low relief with geometric motifs and traditional designs, the details picked out in white, red, and green pigments, to either end in high relief with a figure known as Kandimbang, a protective spirit. The wood of an attractive grain and color.Supported on two separately carved and similarly decorated mask-form feet. (3)Provenance: The collection of the Christensen Fund, 1970s. The Western Australian Museum, gifted from the above, and deaccessioned in the early 1990s. A private collector in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above. The Christensen Fund is a private, non-profit, and non-governmental organization founded in 1957 in San Francisco by Allen D. and Carmen M. Christensen that supports indigenous peoples and their rights. The Christensens shared a strong interest in non-Western art and were enthusiastic collectors. In 1972, the Christensen Fund began to acquire art collections across Africa and the Pacific rim, which were then loaned to museums to arrange for their study and exhibition in Australia, Europe, and the United States. After the death of Allen D. Christensen in 1989, the fund donated its art collections to museums including the Western Australian Museum. Condition: Overall in good condition, commensurate with age. It is engraved and painted in different stages and kept in the men's ritual house for ceremonies such as male initiations.The people of the Sepik area understand the drum's sound as its 'voice.' This voice can carry long distances to announce meetings, call individuals, issue warnings, and even contact neighboring villages. Communication occurs through a complex series of rhythms and tones beat out with a wooden stick by an initiated man.
