Second quarter of 19th century unsigned oil miniature, head and shoulders portrait of Capt Thomas Baker, he wears a blue Naval tunic with white cravat, the frame inscribed in gilt "Capt Thomas Baker, H.M.S. Princess Royal, 1797. Now, Rear-Adml. Sir Thomas Baker. K K.C.B. & C. K K.C.B. & C. 1835". Note: Capt Thomas Baker, a Nelson contemporary, was engaged in several actions. Two were most important. On 25th July, with a squadron in company, he opened fire on the Danish frigate "Freyer" when the Danes refused to allow their ships to be searched. This was the cause of the rupture of the Northern Federation and the preliminary to the battle of Copenhagen. The second important action was when Baker, in the frigate "Phoenix" came across Domanoir's four 74-gun ships, which had escaped Trafalgar. Baker drew their shot and led them to Sir Richard Strachan's ships, who gave battle and overcame them. R.C.F.
