He spent his working life in Shanghai until he left in 1926.During his time in China he held interests in a Christian Mission school and helped to support street children.He seized every opportunity to visit other parts of China and took thousands of photographs. He purchased widely on his travels, particularly woodcarvings, bronzes, traditional kimonos, paintings and porcelain. He treasured silver items and bought much to take home. He travelled home at least four times during his stay in China and these return visits were round-the-world trips in which he travelled through and visited Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Egypt and The Holy Land, the Far East, Canada and USA.On his return to the UK he lived in Northampton where he was a lay preacher and a local councillor. He gave a great many talks on his experiences in China and the many other Countries he had visited.He died in 1962.

J R R Tolkien signed copy of The Hobbit - Unwin Books Fourteenth Impression 1972 ISBN 0 04823070 7, statement from vendor states My mother - Kath Taylor - came by the book and autograph during her employment as Housekeeper to the Rev.John Tolkien who was parish priest at Our Lady of Angels and St Peter in Chains R.C Church in Hartshill, Stoke on Trent, who resided at Northcote House, Hartshill Road. The Rev John Tolkien was the son of J.R.R. Tolkien. Used condition with splitting to spine & some loose pages. Rev John Tolkien was parish priest from 1966 to 1987 and his father J.R.R. Tolkien visited him on many occasions, staying at Northcote House, which at the time was the Presbytery to the church. When Rev J Tolkien came to Our Lady's his live-in housekeeper was Miss K Restall whose name can be seen at the top of the page. My Mother came to work at the presbytery at first to assist Miss Restall but later took on the role as Housekeeper when she retired. The book was given to my mother and signed by the author on one of his visits. The book was later given to me by my mother

λAttributed to Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, FRS (1769-1830)Portrait miniature of Anne, Lady Ellenborough (1769-1843), wearing a white dressRectangular, in a gilt metal repoussé frame114 x 87mmSir Thomas Lawrence painted a portrait of Lady Ellenborough in c.1811, but was dissatisfied with it and failed to complete it (see K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence - A Complete Catalogue of Oil Paintings, 1989, p.183, no.270b). Lady Ellenborough wrote several letters to Lawrence in 1811 regarding the unfinished portrait, saying she 'had rather have the present picture reduced to the smallest size, than relinquish the idea of having it completely finished before she leaves town' (see George Somes Layard (ed.), Sir Thomas Lawrence's Letter-Bag, 1906, pp.74-83).Portrait miniatures by Lawrence are extremely rare, with only a few known to exist in private collections.Ivory Act registration number: F87E4HXCIvory appears structurally sounds with no apparent bowing or splitting. Slight yellowing to the background made apparent by a contrasting strip of brighter painting along the upper edge in correspondence to the frame. A little dust under the glass. Occasional very light hairline scratches, mainly one to the background upper right above the figure and a few by the column centre-left. A thin strip of very mild staining to the lower edge in correspondence to the frame. The figure is in good condition with no significant fading. The frame also in overall good condition.
