The mirror is cast in the center with a crouching beast-form loop surrounded by six smaller ‘lions’ amid fruiting grapevines, and in the outer field with birds in flight amidst further grapevine below a narrow border of florets. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, some small losses, a minor crack to the rim, and a fine dark patina with areas of copper red and malachite green. Provenance: Douglas J. K. Lever (Charles). Davenport Dunn, or the Man of the Day, 22 parts in 21 (as issued), 1st edition, London: Chapman and Hall, July 1857 - April 1859, 44 etched plates by 'Phiz' (H. K. Browne), including frontispiece and additional title (issued in final double-part), numerous advertisement leaves throughout on pink, yellow, white, green, and blue papers, very scarce minor spots, sewn as issued, 2 parts unopened, original pictorial printed pink paper wrappers, somewhat faded and dust-soiled, few minor marks, part III front cover with early ink manuscript signature at head, contained together in brown cloth-covered portfolio with matching morocco-backed slipcase (rubbed with some marks), gilt-lettering to spine, 8voQty: (1)NOTESSadleir 1401; Wolff 4084 both for the bookform. Sadleir regarded Davenport Dunn as the rarest of the octavo novels first published in parts, and this is a rare survival of the original parts in excellent condition. The character of Dunn is loosely based on the notorious Irish financier, politician and swindler John Sadleir, who eventually fell into ruin and committed suicide on Hampstead Heath. Charles Dickens also made use of the character in his novel Little Dorrit, basing Mr. Merdle on Sadleir.

In 1749 he set out on the Grand Tour and in Venice he met Richard Wilson. Wilson travelled with him in his carriage from Venice to Rome late in 1751 and Lock kept many of the drawings that Wilson made on the spot along the way. The town of Chioggia is situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) south of the city. AN IVORY HAKATA-STYLE NETSUKE OF ONO NO TOFU Unsigned Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Published: Schwarz, K. (1992) Netsuke Subjects, no. 199. The netsuke carved from ivory with finely stained details, depicting the famous calligrapher climbing on a large frog and holding a closed parasol in his left hand. Himotoshi to the back. HEIGHT 6.7 cm Condition: Very good condition with only minor surface wear. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Karl Schwarz, exhibited at the MAK, Vienna, 1996.
