Fawkessailed Belle Lurettewinner Bembridge RegattaAugust 1885Admiral Sir Wilmot Hawksworth Fawkes, GCB, KCVO (22 December 1846-29 May 1926), was a Royal Navy officer, who commanded the Royal Yacht Osborne, and became Private Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1897. His last post was as Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth, 1908. The tankard was presented by The Prince of Wales, who would become Edward VII in 1902. In 1899 Fawkes became Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria. He was awarded Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) by King Edward VII on 11 August 1902 for his role in helping to organise the fleet review for the coronation of the King, 1902.See eleven letters addressed to the admiral by royalty, sold Sworders, 26 September 2017. The letters demonstrate the continuous relationship that Fawkes held with royalty. One letter dated November 6th, 1908, is addressed to Fawkes from Prince George, who thanks the admiral for interviewing a young Prince Albert to become a cadet of the Royal Navy, for which he was President. The intimate letter reads: 'I am sorry that in spite of all you did, you were unable to put him at his ease, he has always been rather shy, but I think it is better than being too forward, which many boys are in our days'.The Admiral is a descendant of The Fawkes of Farnely Hall, Otley, and Hawksworth Hall, Yorks. The father of Guye Fawkes, the gunpowder plot conspirator, was a descendant of the Fawkes family in Farnely. J M W Turner was a close friend of Walter Ramsden Hawkesworth Fawkes, a Yorkshire MP (2 March 1769-24 October 1825), which enabled him to build a significant collection of Turner’s works. Turner stayed at Farnely on numerous occasions. His oil painting ‘Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps’, 1812, is said to have been inspired by a storm he experienced on one visit to Farnely.

Ur III, dated 2026 BC. A clay pillow-shaped economic tablet (a loan of 4 5/6 shekels of silver) from an important palace archive of the Sumerian city Iri-Sa?rig, dated to 2026 BC, year 3 of King Ibbi-Sin, with cuneiform text to both broad faces and one edge: 4 5/6 shekels of silver belonging to Shu-Estar, received from Ashgi-bani(?) by Nur-Eshtar, merchant. Witness Shu-nisaba, witness Puzur-ashgi. Year Ibbi-Sin destroyed Simurrum. This text dates to the third year of King Ibbi-Sin, the last king of the Ur III. The text is particularly interesting because it deals with a large amount of silver (4 5/6 shekels = ca 40g"). According to prof. David Owen the Iri-Sa?rig archive is probably the archive of governor whose office was in the local palace. The king and other members of the royal family occasionally traveled to Iri-Sa?rig, perhaps on their way to or from Nippur or other towns. No town in Sumer was visited more often by the king than Iri-Sa?rig. David I. Owen, David I. New Additions to the Iri-Sa?rig/Al-Šarr?k? Archives.
