David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Germans Occupy Paris" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Occupation of Paris 1940 stamp issued June 14, 1990. The fall of France and the German occupation of Paris were so rapid and total, the world stood literally in shock. Less than a month after German Panzers broke into France, Paris was declared an open city. The government fled to Tours, while nearly two million Parisian refugees clogged the roads and hampered the fighting. Not a shot was fired as the Germans moved into "The City of Lights" on June 14. Hitler was ecstatic with his success, his delight captured as he "danced the jig" in the famous but fraudulent photos, and the few Parisians left in the city watched in defeat as German soldiers goose-stepped down the Champs Elys?es. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "HMS Georgetown" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c HMS Georgetown ex-USS Maddox stamp issued September 3, 1990. Though initially committed to neutrality, the United States moved one step closer to an undeclared war against the Axis powers with its transfer of fifty-one older destroyers to Great Britain in the fall of 1940. The agreement exchanged the destroyers for leases of strategically-located military bases in the western Atlantic. In late September 1940, the USS Maddox sailed for the United Kingdom where she was named the HMS Georgetown. Seen plunging through high seas in the North Atlantic, the HMS Georgetown is flying the White Ensign of the Royal Navy and camouflaged to blend into the colors of the ocean. The ship was later transferred to another ally, the Soviet Union, on August 10, 1944 where it was given yet another name, the Zhyostki. She survived the war and was broken up for scrap in 1952. David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Nikola Tesla" Signed lower center. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Nikola Tesla stamp issued September 21, 1985. Known as the "genius who ushered in the power age," Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan -- formerly Austria-Hungary. He received his schooling at the Polytechnic School in Graz, Austria and also at the University of Prague. While at Graz, he learned about the Gramme dynamo ... a generator, which when operated in reverse, became an electric motor. Later, Tesla went to work for the Continental Edison company in Paris. While on assignment, he developed some new ideas about the Gramme dynamo, and constructed the world's first induction motor. This invention incorporated an astonishing feature, called the rotating magnetic field -- a magnetic whirlwind produced in a motor winding by the interaction of the two or more alternating currents. This discovery provided the first practical means to inexpensively produce an electric current and send it over long distances with a minimum loss of current. Tesla moved to America in 1884, and his first employer was the famous Thomas Edison. Although both men were comparable geniuses, their backgrounds were quite diverse and finally led to their separation. So, Tesla established his own laboratory and accomplished much. Among Telsa's many shining achievements are: advances in high voltage and frequency knowledge, the Tesla coil, a system of arc lighting, and a system of wireless transmission.
