Lot 495

A hallmarked 22ct gold wedding band, size K½, approx weight 4.7 gm

Lot 345

A Second World War Royal Fusiliers officer's Service Dress tunic and trousers, the tunic label 1941 dated and bearing the name 2nd Lt K H Wheeler. [The vendor has provided the following biographical notes, "228647 Wheeler, Kenneth Howard, 16th Bn Royal Fusiliers. Born 2nd April 1921. Studied at Roan School for Boys, Greenwich, completing Higher School Certificate in summer 1940. Went on to King's College, London, which was evacuated to Bristol. Trained with Bristol University Senior Training Cadet Corps from October 1940, gaining Certificates A & B in May/July 1941. Signed up for the Territorial Army (Royal Fusiliers) 23rd July 1941. Ordered to report to 164 OCTU in Barmouth, North Wales, on 3rd October 1941. A note of 10th March 1942, signed by the Adjutant of 165 OCTU [sic], says he has been commissioned in the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry and tells him to report to the 2nd Battalion in Basingstoke, Hants, by 20th March. 2nd Lieut K.Wheeler sent on embarkation leave on 7th July, prior to being sent overseas on 19th July 1942. Although a Royal Fusilier, and despite his apparent commissioning in the Ox & Bucks LI he served in North Africa with 1st/5th Bn, Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, as part of 131 Rifle Brigade, 7th Armoured Division, 8th Army. The regimental history mentions him as being wounded at the Battle of Medenine, 7th March 1943. Aged not quite 22, he lost his left eye and was sent to South Africa to recuperate. He appears to have embarked to sail home (on the "Nieuw Amsterdam"?) in February 1944, and is by now shown as a Lieutenant. By 7th April 1944 he was back in the UK. He took part in a "Section in Attack" competition at Harrow School later in 1944. He attended a weapons refresher course, and one on the PIAT, in Dec 1944 & Jan 1945 in Dorking, Surrey. He used to recall walking the six miles from Dorking to Reigate (and back) to visit my mother, who was serving in the ATS and whom he had married in November 1944. Sadly I have no further details for 1945 and early 1946, but I assume he remained in the UK. My older brother was born in March 1946. A handwritten note alludes to a posting to the Control Commission Germany from 20th June 1946. My favourite anecdote recalls an occasion in a bar or mess in Berlin when a well-oiled Australian said to him "Here, Four-Eyes, it's your round!", whereupon he removed his glasses, took out his glass eye and banged it on the bar, saying "Four-Eyes yourself!". The Australian turned green and reeled away. Captain K.H.Wheeler was granted release leave from 1st October 1946, due for final release from the Army on 18th December 1946. He returned to KCL and was awarded his BA in August 1948 and a teacher's diploma in 1949. (I was born in December 1948). I don't know when he was promoted to Captain, but he did say that he didn't hold the rank for long enough to be entitled to use it as a civilian. His Army pension papers were always addressed to Lieutenant K.H.Wheeler BA. He became a schoolmaster, and served with the CCF at St Albans School (1950-54) and at Worcester Royal Grammar School (1954-59), finishing as Commanding Officer with the rank of Major."]
