II, p. 665, repr. 541).

Maxwell (James Clerk, 1831-1879). Autograph letter signed, Glenlair, Dalbeattie, 13 May 1869, to [Archibald] Smith, ‘Here are Green’s results for the magnetic state of a soft iron cylinder of radius and length 2l [lambda]. He uses a coefficient g which is the same as Poissons k which cannot exceed 1. It is related to Thalen’s Neumanns K thus.’, continuing afters some algebraic equations, ‘In any paper of mine when I have used a symbol m [mu] (corresponding to Faraday’s idea of the conductivity of a medium for magnetic induction)’, continuing with further algebra and explanations, referring to Thalen once more who ‘gives K = 32’, signed ‘J. Clerk Maxwell’ on the third page and giving an extra note on the calculations of three values of K and p below, 3 pages, a little browning at lower margins, old adhesion mark to final blank, 8vo. Scientific letters by James Clerk Maxwell are very rarely found; the last one at auction apparently seen in 1992. This is an uncommonly fine letter on the subject of induced magnetization to a fellow mathematician. Maxwell covers this topic in his seminal ‘Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism’, a two-volume work first published four years after this letter. (1).
