Steinbeck (John) A Russian Journal, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author [?]"Vu du buiche dun pi quah dus an plu k. / John Steinbeck.", illustrations by Robert Capa, original cloth-backed boards (binding variant 4), top edge stained blue and lightly marked, dust-jacket, very minor nicks to edges, spine ends a little creased, New York, [Goldstone & Payne A27a], 4to, 1948. *** The note to this copy is written in phonetic (and possibly pidgin) French, mimicking other foreign language inscriptions from Steinbeck to the Heylers; presumably an obscure inside joke. The writer may be referencing signing this book for the newly wedded couple two years after its publication: "D'un pourquois deux ans plus que".Inscribed to the author's niece Joan (also known as Toni) and her husband, David Heyler. Possibly a part of the collection sent to him as mentioned in Steinbeck's letters (see note to lot 120).  Provenance: The Mary Steinbeck Dekker Family Collection.
