David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Pearl Harbor" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Japanese Attack Pearl Harbor 1941 - American Warplanes stamp issued December 7, 1991. At 8 a.m. on the morning of December 7, 1941, Army Lt. General Walter Short heard from his quarters the distant rat-tat of gunfire and the muted roar of aircraft engines. Within minutes a junior officer confirmed that Fort Shafter 13 miles inland from Pearl Harbor, was under attack from enemy aircraft, as were Wheeler and Hickam Fields and Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Chaos ruled the day, for Short -- fearful of sabotage -- had ordered all aircraft to be kept in wing-to-wing formations in the center of the unprotected airfields. Although only a few aircraft survived the first attack, American pilots attempted to pursue the enemy. But their valiant efforts could not stem the Japanese onslaught, which had effectively destroyed 75 percent of America's Pacific-based air power. Image Size: 27 x 19.25 in. Overall Size: 27 x 24.25 in. Unframed. (B13411 / B13412 / B13413 / B13414)

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Flag Day Proclaimed" Signed lower center. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary August 3, 2002. The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the Republic on June 14, 1777, and determined: "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice." The U.S. flag as a symbol of democracy and freedom has remained constant since that day, but its design has evolved to keep pace with the Nation's growth. Likewise, the perception of the importance of the flag as a national symbol has taken time to develop. It took a century for an official flag birthday to come to fruition. Flag Day was first observed in 1877 when Congress asked that all public buildings fly the flag on June 14. The idea caught on, and individuals enthusiastically advocated the regular observance of June 14 as "Flag Birthday." In following years the celebration developed mainly as one involving school children although adults, too, participated. In 1914, U.S. Secretary of Interior Franklin K. Lane delivered a Flag Day address. Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day was officially proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, but not until 1949 did President Harry Truman sign an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. It took another 17 years for Congress to establish National Flag Week in 1966. On June 14, 2002, Americans everywhere celebrated the 225th birthday of their flag. Image Size: 15 x 13 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B17018)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Undampened Spirits" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Undampened Spirits" published in 1983. When Marcus Whitman returned from Oregon in 1843, tales of free land in the western "paradise" began to sweep the country. Talk of settling there became widespread with thousands of people selling their belongs and gathering in western Missouri to join in the "Great Migration" west. They came to the towns of Independence or St. Joseph, Missouri, or Council Grove, Kansas, where abundant pasture and fresh springs would sustain them as they prepared their caravans for the long, arduous journey. Not one of them knew the way to go, so they joined forces and hired a guide to take them. A captain was elected and rules were drawn up. Supplies were purchased and the wagon train would finally be ready to begin its long journey. Life on the trail was difficult, uncomfortable, and often dangerous. The travelers were constantly plagued by either dryness and dust -- or rain and mud. In her diary, Amelia Stewart Knight wrote on June 1, 1853, about the realities of pioneer travel: "The men and boys are all soaking wet and look sad and comfortless. The little ones and myself are shut up in the wagons from the rain ... take us all together we are a poor looking set, and all this for Oregon. I am thinking while I write, 'Oh, Oregon, you must be a wonderful country.' " In spite of these hardships, most of the pioneers reached their goal. By the end of the Great Migration, more than eight thousand Americans had settled in the Oregon country, spirits undampened by the hard trek west. Overall Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed. (B07479)

Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Charles Kaman" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Charles H. Kaman Commemorative Cover postmarked April 17, 1999. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Charles Kaman graduated magna cum laude with an Aeronautical Engineering degree from Catholic University in 1940. While employed at the Hamilton Standard division of United Aircraft, he rose to become chief of aerodynamics for the firm's helicopter industry. Kaman perfected a model of the helicopter rotor system and founded his own business in December 1945. In 1949, the company's first production helicopter, the K-225, was introduced. Two years later, a K-225 fitted with a gas turbine engine became the world's first turbine-powered helicopter. During the 1950s and 1960s, Kaman Corporation was a significant producer of military helicopters. Especially notable was the company's H-43 Husky -- the only military helicopter to go through its entire service history with no loss of life or accidents attributed to the aircraft's design. Other achievements by Kaman's firm include the first all-composite rotor blade and the first remote-controlled helicopter. During the 1990s, Kaman developed the K-MAX, the world's first helicopter designed specifically for medium and heavy lift operation. In recognition of his achievements, Kaman was awarded the highest honors given by the Department of Defense, the Navy League and the British Royal Aeronautical Society. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 17.25 in. Unframed. (B16464)

David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Benjamin Franklin" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Benjamin Franklin may have been the first true American -- and the most representative, particularly of our more amiable and familiar characteristics. He was the first to use the "American" language as in Poor Richard's Almanac and his Autobiography. He was clearly the first American journalist and humorist. He was the leading American educator; founder of public libraries, the American Philosophical Society, and the College of Philadelphia -- which later became the University of Pennsylvania -- and he championed a practical American education. He was the leading American scientist of his day, and was gladly welcomed to the most prestigious European Academies where he was always "Doctor Franklin." He was also the first American politican-statesman, and has some claim to being the leading statesman of his generation. His Albany Plan of Union (1754) foreshadowed American Federalism; he helped draft and sign the Articles of Confederation; he presided over the Constitutional Convention, and he also represented the United States, in both London and Paris. Above all, Franklin was an irrespressible do-gooder: He could not look at a stove without planning a better stove ... or a school ... or the postal service ... or a Constitution; in all these matters he took the lead. It has been said "he wrestled the lightning from the skies and hurled tyrants from their thrones." Image Size: 21 x 18 in. Overall Size: 27.25 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B07902)

David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Benjamin Franklin and Map of America 1783" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Treaty of Paris stamp issued September 2, 1983. The American Revolution raged on for years as America fought desperately for her freedom and independence. However, the course of the war and the history of America was abruptly changed in 1783, when the famous Treaty of Paris was signed. This important treaty, which officially ended the American Revolution, was signed on September 3, 1783, by such key figures in American history as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay. It was hailed as "one of the most important political events that ever happened on this globe" by John Adams. In addition, Benjamin Franklin called it "the greatest triumph in the history of American diplomacy." Aside from ending the Revolutionary War, the Treaty of Paris also set up a number of conditions regarding America's rights and boundaries. For example, the treaty established the boundaries of the United States at the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River and the northern border of Florida ... which the British ceded to Spain. It also recognized the right of Americans to fish off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and to navigate the Mississippi River freely. This historic treaty -- between Great Britain on one side and the United States, France, Spain, and Holland on the other -- was of great magnitude to America. Image Size: 21 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 27.25 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B08117)

1986 Ford Sierra 4x4 Transmission: manualMileage:45100In 1985, at the Geneva Motor Show, the four-wheel drive Sierra XR4x4 was shown as a derivative of the XR4i. The XR4x4 had a single rear spoiler instead of the distinctive biplane unit used on the XR4 but did receive unique alloy wheels. A five-door version was added soon thereafter. The four-wheel drive allowed for an extra margin of security on slick or snowy roads, while retaining the car's rear-wheel drive comportment. The original, rear-wheel drive XR4 was quickly taken out of production after the XR4x4 arrived. The XR4x4 originally came equipped with the 2.8 litre Cologne V6 engine using the same Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection system used since 1977 in the Granada. This rare Ford Sierra shows low mileage as a result of being stored in a barn for a number of years. Presenting well in white paintwork with a grey cloth interior, this Sierra model caused quite a stir when it was launched. The aerodynamically styled Sierra was a big departure from the traditionally shaped Cortina it replaced. This example benefits from front electric windows, a factory fitted opening glass sunroof and factory fitted air conditioning. Offered without reserve and presented to auction with a V5C registration document and a fresh MoT test certificate.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1942 International K6 Fire Engine Transmission: manualMileage:76497The International K and KB series are trucks that were produced by International Harvester, the first being the K introduced in mid 1940. In total there were 42 models, 142 different wheelbase lengths and load ratings ranging from 1/2 ton to 90,000 lbs. They are best known for their durability, pre-war design in a post-war era, and low price. The heavy duty K6 and larger use a centre hinged butterfly hood rather than the rear hinged hood of the smaller trucks. K6 and K7 share the same hood, fenders, and grille and use the smaller Blue Diamond engines. This K6 truck is a part of history, originally built for the Singapore fire service by International in the USA. Before it could be delivered, the bombing of Pearl Harbour had taken place, and Singapore was invaded, the truck was therefore diverted to Australia where it spent its entire working life as the fire truck of a rural community near Brisbane. It was decommissioned in the 1980’s after which it fell into a state of disrepair until a local enthusiast took on the extensive renovation project. Taking two years to complete, it was fully restored to its original glory and became a regular sight at the car and truck shows around Brisbane. After this initial project, he went on to amass a further 17 fire trucks, all of which he restored to show condition. On a visit to Australia, our vendor saw this truck advertised, and immediately flew up to Brisbane where it was love at first sight. He had the truck shipped back to the UK and undertook the conversion to the fun dining truck it is today. The vendor declares he has had fabulous fun with her, including family and children’s parties, hosting lunches at Goodwood, attending various charity events and numerous classic shows.Equipped with a built-in microwave cooker, matching crockery set and 3 brass helmets, tea and coffee station and even a kitchen sink, comfortably seating 8-10 (depending on sizes) it is described as 100% fun. Reported to start and drive very well, albeit not fast, this K6 is ready to continue service as a fun hobby, or perfectly capable of becoming a fantastic commercial operation.Guide price £20,000 - £25,000Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 201

1945 GMC DUKW Transmission: manualMileage:3108The DUKW was designed and developed to solve the problem of resupply to army units who had just performed an amphibious landing. Its name was derived from the manufacturing initials used by General Motors at the time; D designed in 1942, U utility, K all-wheel drive, W dual rear axles. Now colloquially known as a Duck, it was initially rejected by the combined armed services. However, when a United States Coast Guard patrol ran aground on a sand bar near Provincetown, Massachusetts, an experimental DUKW that happened to be in the area had no trouble in rescuing the seven stranded Coast Guardsmen when more conventional craft had been prevented from doing so. The military opposition to the DUKW soon melted. This General Motors DUKW is one of the largest lots ever offered by Historics. Manufactured in 1945 it is one of the last 150 ever made. This DUKW has only had two owners. You could say three, as the US government ordered them to be manufactured, but never took delivery. The first owner was the Tennessee Valley River Authority who purchased six or more in 1945. They fell out of use in the 1980s and Mr. Glyn Hewitt of Hewitt Marine purchased this one. He shipped it over in 1988 and added it to a pile of DUKWs in a field in Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire. Following a lengthy ordering delay the vendor took delivery in January 2000. Two Varta lorry batteries give 24 volt starting power and it was on the road but the petrol engine seized so Rex Ward of Reading did a diesel conversion in 2003, fitting a six-cylinder Bedford 330 diesel engine which, we are told, has proven to be reliable, starting first time, every time. He also put in air over hydraulic brakes, a marine synchromesh gearbox and new brake cylinders all round, this made a much safer vehicle with much better braking. This DUKW has had two major mechanical overhauls, in January 2000 and May 2012. Both by DUKW specialist Rex Ward of Reading. Engine and drive train accessories re-newed or repaired as necessary. It is unusual to find a DUKW in such good order and with as many original features as are displayed on GSL 629, these include an original kedge anchor by Danforth Berkeley and the original Garwood Detroit winch with fitted wire, two US fuel cans on the rear deck, new three-part canvas, new metal (tyre) chock, original hinged passenger seat with original cushions, and a full set of canvas support irons and all original floor boarding in rear load area .Also in the rear loading area is a secure box containing gear oil, wheel brace, and a tin containing the bronze bungs which seal the bilge drain hole and the breather holes in the prop shaft outer housings. These are extremely rare, and when fitted are outside the underneath of the hull. It has the original bilge pump which works at an incredible 300 gallons a minute and also present are two good spare wheels with fitted tyres which have the seventeen good nuts for the removeable tyre retaining ring. There are two correct pattern front tyres which were imported from the USA at a cost of £900, four good rear tyres and a good spare on the rear deck. There are also six spare, part-worn, tyres which could be used for a display vehicle but not for road use. It should be noted that the DUKW tyre size is almost unique in American WWII vehicles. Our 81 year old vendor tells us that he regularly takes the DUKW from its custom built barn to military vehicle days at Debach airfield near Ipswich and Rougham airfield near Bury St. Edmunds. He also says that the 100 mile round trips at 35mph are enough for him. Offered to auction with a V5C registration document and a comprehensive history file containing various bills receipts and photographs, this road ready DUKW is a real head turner and is offered with a sensible reserve. Potential buyers should note that GSL 629 has not been on the water for a number of years and should be fully inspected before doing so. Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.
