Karl Griesbaum of Triberg - Good quality German Black Forest enamel singing bird box automaton, the rectangular top decorated with an Arcadian scene of shepherdesses and sheep in a pasture, with central hinged oval cover enclosing an articulated bird automaton, which swivels, chirps and gently flaps its wings, on pierced brass grille, the sides all with further landscape panels, the brass case frame with engraved wrigglework decoration, including to base framing bird motif and initials K G beside winding arbor, 10.3cm x 6.6cm x 4.1cm high, sold with a bird-shaped winding keyCondition report: Good structural order - a few minor inclusions to enamel but otherwise appear free of enamel cracks as inspected. Mechanism functions as described, but bird does not always currently fully retract beneath cover when ceasing singing (though it does sometimes) - we would recommend a clean and overhaul / service as standard. Bird's feathers perhaps a little drab due to prolonged air contact. Should be easily restorable and has no major faults. Private collection.

A CARVED PINK GLASS 'LOTUS' SNUFF BOTTLE, 18TH-19TH CENTURYChina. The compressed globular body rising from a short oval foot to a cylindrical neck, with a recessed base. The body neatly carved and incised with three rows of overlapping lotus petals in relief, rising from a lotus leaf with down-turned edges. The semi-translucent glass of soft pink and deep pink streaks.Provenance: From the private collection of Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter. Tuyet Nguyet was the founder and chief editor of Arts of Asia. She married Stephen Markbreiter, an English architect, in 1959 and moved to Hong Kong to work as a journalist. Arts of Asia's first regular edition appeared in 1971. In the magazine, Nguyet sought to combine authoritative content from major experts with detailed coverage of the Asian art market. Tuyet Nguyet was an early member of The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, attending her first convention in 1973, and was later elected as an honorary member.Condition: Very good condition with minor nibbling to the lip.Stopper: Jadeite stopper, carved spoon Weight: 35 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 72 mm. A CAMEO AGATE 'HORSE' SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850China. Very well hollowed, of rounded rectangular form rising from a wide oval foot with a recessed base, to a short cylindrical neck. Carved on one side utilizing the darker markings to depict a horse tethered to a hitching post. The translucent stone of a beige tone with a fine polish.Provenance: Property from the Rubin family of St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Condition: Good condition with little nibbling to lip and base, a few nicks to the horse's head and back. The stopper with cracks and losses. Stopper: Tourmaline cabochon Weight: 74 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 65 mm. Diameter neck 22 mm and mouth 7 mm. A horse tethered to a post forms a common rebus which expresses a wish for speedy promotion for young candidates.
