c.1927 Mars 956cc A20Registration no. not registeredFrame no. D.R.P K.1.002. (stamped to headstock)Engine no. 2515 (to engine casing and sump)•Legendary and highly desirable German motorcycle•An older restoration•Requires recommissioning/restorationMars was founded by Paul Reissmann in Nuremberg, Germany in 1873 and commenced production with a range of cast-iron stoves followed by sirens, grinding machines and bicycles. Motorcycle manufacture began in 1903 using proprietary engines supplied by Zedel and Fafnir, and Mars also made cars from 1906 to 1908. Introduced in 1920, the company's most famous model was the legendary 'White Mars' (Weiße Mars), designed by engineer Claus Franzenburg, which was powered by a 956cc horizontally opposed, twin-cylinder, sidevalve engine made exclusively for Mars by Maybach. Unusually, the 'White Mars' featured a box-section frame constructed of welded and riveted steel sheet rather than the almost universal steel tubing. Early examples employed a two-speed, twin-chain transmission, while a conventional three-speed gearbox was standardised later and other colours offered. The Mars' high standard of workmanship and finish encouraged sales initially, only for the economic downturn of the mid-1920s forced production to cease for a few years.Towards the decade's end former employees Johann and Karl Müller restarted production of the Mars motorcycle (initially under the 'MA' brand name). After more than half a century in production, the Mars factory closed finally closed its gates in June 1958. Of all its many models, it is the 'White Mars' that is the most celebrated; there is an example in the Neue Sammlung international design museum in Munich, Germany, and in the 1980s the model even featured on a German stamp. Several copies have been produced in recent years. Believed to be an older restoration (date unknown), this White Mars is accompanied by file of paperwork (in German) to include a note and other correspondence dated 2000 suggesting the vendor may have purchased the machine from the noted collector Dieter Mutschler. There is also restoration correspondence from Mike Kron together with his starting instructions, riding instructions, technical data, etc. There are no other documents with the machine, therefore it is not known whether it is registered or has run since restoration. Notable features include an internal copper fuel tank; a Robert Bosch BA2 magneto; a Scharlach headlamp; a Luxor rear lamp; and a spare identity plaque. Clearly unused for a considerable period, the machine will require careful recommissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to the condition, completeness, authenticity and compatibility of this Lot's component parts prior to bidding.Footnotes:Please note that this vehicle is from outside the UK. At that time, the late owner possessed a correct Mars engine, carburettor, and magneto but lacked the necessary frame and additional components to restore the engine into a complete motorcycle. It is understood that the late owner then commissioned marque specialist Mike Kron to reconstruct the machine around the aforementioned engine, carburettor, and magneto. Accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the age, authenticity and compatibility of this Lot's component parts prior to bidding. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * N* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.N If purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, whilst the responsibility of submitting the NOVA rests with the Buyer to do so, Bonhams will facilitate the process by engaging an agent (SHIPPIO) to undertake the NOVA and C88 (customs) application if applicable on the Buyer's behalf. A fee of £350 + VAT to do so will be added to the Buyer's invoice. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1953 Norton 497cc Dominator 88 De LuxeRegistration no. 776 UXBFrame no. 122 53151Engine no. 53151 122This Dominator 88 was sold new in Paris; it has the dealer's plaque on the headstock and had unique tank transfers with the dealer's name. New copies may be found among the accompanying documents and photographs. The Dominator was purchased at Bonhams' Stafford Sale in October 2002 and since then has been fully rebuilt. The complete history of the rebuild is recorded in a logbook with supporting documents. The frame and cycle parts have been repainted and the brightwork re-chromed. All cycle parts except the front mudguard are original - even the silencers were reconditioned and re-plated - while the seat was re-covered by R K Leighton. The engine was fully rebuilt with Super Blend main bearings and a balanced crankshaft, and the transmission overhauled. The carburettor has been re-sleeved; the engine breather improved; a new braided wiring harness installed; and a Kingpin Components oil tap with magneto cutout fitted. Other upgrades include a 1955-type aluminium cylinder head; improved leverage front brake; electronic voltage regulator; 12V electrics; LED lighting; and a lithium battery. Last run in September 2024 and described by our vendor as an easy starter and very reliable, the machine is offered with an NOC dating certificate; a V5C document; and the aforementioned restoration records.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1982 Honda 748cc CB750 F-B Super SportRegistration no. SPK 7XFrame no. RC04-4001932Engine no. RC04E-2401889After the iconic Honda single overhead camshaft 750 had taken the motorcycling world by storm, the company probably ran it on for longer than they should. After all, - how do you follow an icon? The answer was a radical re-style, and a double overhead camshaft motor. Introduced in 1979, the new machine, also known as the KZ, featured twin front discs, Comstar wheels, and an extra 10 bhp over the SOHC K model. As with the SOHC CB750K and its sports partner, the CB750F, the CB750KZ's sports equivalent was the CB750FB. This model was the last of its type, as it was not extended into 1983, and whilst the new Nighthawks replaced the K models, the next sports versions were to feature the VF750 motor. The vendor acquired SPK 7X in October 2023 in need of some attention. He stripped the machine and had the frame powder coated, the top end of the engine was stripped, the valves were replaced and reground, the cylinder head was cleaned and polished, the top end was reassembled with new gaskets. The bottom end was found to be sound, so was left undisturbed. The ignition timing was correctly set and the carbs cleaned and balanced. A new Honda wiring loom was sourced and fitted. The vendor reports that SPK 7X now runs and rides very well. The Honda has been used occasionally since completion, but a new hobby necessitates the need for more space in his garage. Documentation comprises a current V5C.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1939 Velocette 348cc KSS MkIIRegistration no. DWR 787Frame no. MS5120 (see text)Engine no. 8662By the end of the 1920s, Veloce's range of over-head camshaft K-Series roadsters boasted a host of variations on the theme that included Normal, Sports, Super Sports, Touring, Economy and twin-port models. Introduced in 1925, the KSS was the Super Sports version while the KTS tourer employed the same overhead-camshaft engine in virtually identical cycle parts, differences being confined mainly to mudguard style and wheel sizes. Introduced for the 1936 season, the MkII version of the KSS/KTS represented a major redesign, featuring many improvements including a new aluminium-alloy cylinder head with enclosed valve-gear, plus the cradle frame and heavyweight Webb forks of the new MSS tourer. In this form the KSS resumed production post-war in November 1946 before being updated, together with the other road models, with (optional) Dowty Oleomatic telescopic front forks in August 1947. Expensive to produce, the KSS was dropped from the range at the year's end.First registered on 29th March 1939, this MkII KSS has spent most of its time in West Yorkshire with owners in Leeds and Dewsbury. The Velo has belonged to the vendor's late brother in Wakefield since 1974. Offered for recommissioning/restoration and sold strictly as viewed, the machine comes with an old-style buff logbook and a V5\C Registration Certificate, listing the frame number as J120.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
The Ivan Kessell Collectionc.1934 Velocette 349cc KSSRegistration no. CV 333Frame no. to be advisedEngine no. KSS-5191Continuously developed, the innovative Velocette two-strokes had proved reliable, economical and very popular, but by the early 1920s it had become apparent that a more upmarket model was required. Other manufacturers were fielding new overhead-valve and overhead-camshaft machines, and Veloce Ltd followed suit, the Percy Goodman-designed, overhead-cam Model K first appearing in 1924. By the end of the 1920s Veloce's range of K-Series roadsters boasted a host of variations on the theme that included Normal, Sports, Super Sports, Touring, Economy and twin-port models. Introduced in 1925, the KSS was the Super Sports version while the KTS tourer employed the same overhead camshaft engine in virtually identical cycle parts, differences being confined mainly to mudguard style and wheel sizes. An older restoration, this Cornish registered KSS MkI is believed to have been acquired by Ivan Kessell in the early 1980s. The machine has been on long-term museum display and will require recommissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Nevertheless, the KSS presents well and represents a wonderful opportunity to improve on an older restoration. Accompanying paperwork consists of old/current V5C documents. It should be noted that the V5c incorrectly records the date of manufacture as 1929.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1973 Norton Commando 850 RoadsterRegistration no. CDM 625MFrame no. 308869Engine no. 308869This extensively restored and sensibly upgraded Norton Commando 850 Roadster comes with a logbook detailing the complete history of its rebuild, which was carried out between 2018 and 2020. The original frame paint was retained as it was in very good condition, while the original plated parts were re-chromed and the fuel tank and side panels repainted. The engine was rebuilt with new Super Blend bearings and seals but otherwise is original, while the gearbox was overhauled and uprated with a Super Blend layshaft bearing. The brakes have been reconditioned/uprated and an uprated master cylinder fitted. The carburettors are new Amal Concentrics and the exhaust system and silencers likewise are new. The Commando has been fitted with a Colorado Norton belt primary drive and electric starter, and the transfers too came from his American specialist. The front fork was rebuilt with new seals and new shock absorbers installed. There is also new electrical wiring, a lithium battery, and LED lighting. Upholstery specialists R K Leighton re-covered the original seat. Particularly worthy of note is the Velocette-type anti-drain oil system fitted, which we are advised had proven to be '100% reliable'. Last run in September 2024, the machine is offered with a V5C document. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
c.1934 Zündapp 797cc K800Registration no. not registeredFrame no. 20113 (overpainted)Engine no. 140754 (and engine/gearbox mating number)•Rare, top-of-the-range luxury tourer•An older restoration•Requires recommissioningFounded at the height of WWI to manufacture armaments, Zündapp found a new role post-war as a producer of motorcycles under the direction of new owner, Dr Fritz Neumeyer, building its first machine, a Levis-powered two-stroke, in 1921. The firm began making its own engines in 1924, selling more than 10,000 machines that year, and at the Berlin Motor Show in 1933 introduced the first of the horizontally opposed, four-stroke twins that it is best remembered for. These formed part of an extensive and diverse range of models, all but the smallest two-stroke being designated by the letter 'K' (for kardan, meaning 'shaft'). Among the models premiered were the K400 (398cc) and K500 (496cc) sidevalve twins, both of which employed designer Richard Küchen's unconventional all-chain four-speed 'gearbox' and, as the designation suggests, shaft final drive. Introduced at the same time was another Küchen design: a horizontally opposed four made in 598cc (K600) and 797cc (K800) capacities. Common to all the larger models and eminently suited to withstanding the stresses and strains imposed by travel on unmade roads, the robust frame and girder forks were made of pressed steel, an advanced feature at the time. The new Zündapp range was an enormous success and in September 1933 the firm produced its 100,000th machine, quite an achievement after little more than a decade as a motorcycle manufacturer. The larger Zündapps saw service in substantial numbers with the German Army during WW2, military versions being identified by a 'W' (Wehrmacht) model suffix. An older restoration, since deteriorated, this example of Zündapp's rare Art Deco masterpiece has clearly not been used for a considerable period; accordingly, the machine will require careful recommissioning or potentially restoration prior to further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the condition, completeness, authenticity and compatibility of this Lot's component parts prior to bidding.
