ZULU KNOBKERRY SOUTH AFRICA, LATE 19TH CENTURY carved wood and iron studs, long shaft with offset ballhead and two opposing planes (Dimensions: 56cm long)(56cm long) Provenance: Private collection, Scotland Note: "Knobkerries are probably the most commonly collected of artefacts surviving from European contact with indigenous South African communities. The Zulu people perfected the form by offsetting slightly the ballhead and creating two opposing planes, top and bottom. Some have shallow scalloping which one could read as a stylised headring" Conru, K. 2002. The Art of Southeastern Africa. Pg. 210.
NGUNI DIVINERS STAFF SOUTHERN AFRICA carved wood, with a serpent coiling up the shaft, the eyes recessed and possibly once inset with glass beads, with a small bulb terminal (Dimensions: 118cm long)(118cm long) Provenance: Terence and Bernice Pethica Collection, United Kingdom Note: "Although some of the earliest coiled snake staffs seem to have come from the Eastern Cape, several appear to have been collected in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, suggesting that the practice of carrying staffs of this kind might have spread from the Cape to other, neighbouring regions, possibly in the course of the 19th century. This would be consistent with the evidence indicating that these staffs were probably used by ritual specialists rather than chiefs, for diviners commonly use similar symbols and motifs throughout Southern Africa." Conru, K. 2002. The Art of Southeastern Africa. P. 211.

A WWII ERA IMPERIAL JAPANESE 'GOOD LUCK' FLAG, 'Yosegaki Hinomaru' measuring approximately 120cm x 90cm, the flag is commonly known as the Circle of The Sun design and this example has many separate items of Japanese writing on it, this could be from family members wishing the recipient good luck on his service, usually these small messages radiated outwards from the Sun, but not in this example, these flags were taken off to War by their owners and in lots of cases worn under their uniforms, as if granting them 'Safekeeping in Battle' it was also common, for these flags to be taken from the bodies of Dead Soliders as a macabre keepsake/souvenier of the conflict, this flag has the faint remains of details of the possible soldier who liberated the flag as follows, Pte K.....'A' Coy, battery, Welch Regiment, Kalaw SSS Burma .... Possibly this solider was part of the 2nd Btn who saw action against the Japanese there
