Das Personal des von langer Hand geplanten und von Munch selbst als "Lebensfries" betitelten Flickwerks ist stark begrenzt und findet sich für klangvoll variierende Teilaussagen immer wieder neu zusammen. Allen gemein ist die flächige, oft skizzenhafte Verschleifung des symbolisch aufgeladenen Kolorits, eine Codierung der Charaktere und Stimmungen, die mit sich selbst funktionierend, eine feine Distanz zum Betrachter wahrt - ihn sinnreizend informiert, aber nicht gänzlich verschlingt. Den passenden Rahmen für diesen Reigen schmerzvoller und endlicher Zwischenmenschlichkeiten (aka Liebe) sieht der scheue Munch in einem der nordischen Heimat entlehnten, leise beklemmenden Idyll aus abenteuerlich geschwungener Küstenlinie und undurchdringlichem Wald. Im Jahre 1902, zur 5. Ausstellung der Berliner Sezession, wird dem Maler die Ehre zuteil, mit diesen zwischen 1889 und 1901 gefertigten Arbeiten einen eigenen Saal füllen zu dürfen. Um dem Publikum die zähflüssige Existenzproblematik möglichst wirkungsvoll zu vermitteln, gestaltet er die vier Wände leidenschronologisch vom zarten "Keimen der Liebe“, über das "Bleiben und Vergehen der Liebe", die lähmende "Lebensangst" bis hin zum unausweichlichen Ende, dem "Tod". Das fleischlockende Gleichnis "Die drei Stadien der Frau" ist dem zweiten Abschnitt zugeordnet und wird 1894 beendet, als Munch in Berlin weilt und sich von den Künstlerkollegen des geschätzten "PAN"-Gründers Meier-Graefe in Drucktechniken unterrichten lässt. Die bereits gemalten Sequenzen werden grafisch aufgearbeitet, die im Entstehen begriffenen in immer neuen Versionen meisterhaft begleitet. Bei der oberwähnten weiblichen Trias wird nun 1899, unter Wegnahme von Farbe und blutig scheidendem Männerherzen, lithographisch und spiegelverkehrt das psychologische Moment sichtlich erhöht. Das herangezoomte, beschnittene Motiv wird reizvoll auf unterschiedlich eingefärbte Papiere gesetzt, die Frauen werden als starke Einheit strichreich miteinander verwoben. Mit dem Druck kommt auch der intensivere Kontakt zum Beschauer und so kann das Blatt als Aufforderung oder gar Warnung verstanden werden.Ein erklärfreudiger Brief des Schöpfers an den Kunstkritiker Karl Scheffler vom 3.2.1924 identifiziert die weiß gewandete Lichtgestalt mit dem entrückten Lächeln als "das geliebte Weib oder Madel". Das "lebensfrohe Weib" - im Gemälde ein körperleuchtender Rotschopf mit frivolem Lächeln - im Druck ein blasshäutiger Vamp mit wirrem Schwarzhaar und lüstern rollenden Augäpfeln, zelebriert Sexualität und Fruchtbarkeit offen im bekannten Gestus der hinter den Kopf erhobenen Arme. Das verhärmte, bleichgesichtige Dunkelholz, durch wenige weiße Kratzer rudimentär belebt und mundlos zum Schweigen verdammt, fungiert gemalt gern als Sprachrohr Gevatter Tods, hier darf es "Nonne" sein. Seinen Fries, so schreibt der Künstler weiter, hätte er dem befreundeten Dichter Henrik Ibsen 1895 gezeigt und diese Szene ganz besonders ausführlich erläutern müssen. Vier Jahre später, zur Zeit der Entstehung des vorliegenden Exemplars, finden sich, so Munch, die Protagonistinnen in eben jener Konstellation in Ibsens letztem Werk "Wenn wir Toten erwachen".
