ARTIST: G. K. BENDA (Georges Klugelmann) PRINTER: Philippe G. Dreyfus, Paris DESCRIPTION: My, is it windy out there! G.K. Benda may well have taken a page from L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, as he depicts Mistinguett fetchingly pulling a Toto-esque purse pup back from the whipping winds. Over her 50-year career in French song, dance, and cabaret, Mistinguett was known both for her coquettish whimsy and for her flamboyant costumes, which we see here: a red chrysanthemum-like butterfly at the end of her hat, extending from caterpillar-like stripes; ivy on her shoe-buckles; the candy-cane-like line of the dog leash... This costume is perfect for both December and March holidays.Overall Framed Size: 61 x 47 in.

Lot 480

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Henry David Thoreau" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Shapers of America Collection produced throughout 1986 and 1987. Although the collected writings of Henry David Thoreau fill some twenty volumes, his name -- and fame -- will forever be linked with Walden: of Life in the Woods. It is no wonder that Thoreau remains an enigma. He lived his life in the shadows. With few intimate friends, Thoreau lived always in Concord -- except when escaping to the greater peace of Walden Pond, but a mile away. And after death, his fame came to rest on the fact that he lived almost independently of familiar civilization, in a way reminiscent of an earlier and simpler time when men built their own cabins and grew their own food. At Walden, Thoreau communed with Nature and with God, testing the Emersonian gospel of self-reliance. Walden Pond was to Thoreau "the earth's eye," there he "looked deep into the secrets of Nature." Thus, the pond provided both a laboratory and a symbol. As Thoreau wrote, "I cannot come nearer to God and Heaven than to live in Walden forever." But it was for only two years (1845-47) that he resided there, studying his peaceful surroundings with the eye of a "Natural" philosopher and the mind of a "Moralist." Having thus contemplated nature and its laws -- laws higher, in Thoreau's mind, than those of society, he preached "civil disobedience." And, though others viewed him as nonconformist when he refused to pay taxes -- in protest of the United States War with Mexico (1846-48) -- Thoreau himself believed that he was merely conforming to "higher" laws than those imposed by constitution or man. Image Size: 18 x 21.75 in. Overall Size: 24 x 27 in. Unframed. (B11610)

1968 Sunbeam Stiletto Transmission: manualMileage:9000The Stiletto is the sporty version of the Imp, the Rootes Group's innovative small car devised to take on the Mini. The new small saloon was launched in 1963 and built at a brand new factory at Linwood, Scotland. It was co-designed by Michael Parkes, a development engineer for Ferrari, and one of its most notable features was the all-aluminium, high-revving overhead camshaft engine mounted at the rear, based on the lightweight Coventry Climax racing engine. The Imp also boasted all-independent suspension, plus access to the luggage tray behind the rear seats via the opening rear window, a very early hatchback. An improved Mk. II version appeared in 1966, which did away with such oddities as the pneumatic throttle control. Sharp rack and pinion steering makes these true driver's cars, with a sprightly turn of speed thanks to a light weight of just 1560lbs. The Stiletto, introduced in 1967, is distinguished from its lesser brethren by a sloping coupé rear roofline (on these the rear window doesn't open) and quad headlights, while it used the Imp Sport engine, producing 55bhp at 6100rpm and giving 90mph and 0-50mph in just over ten seconds. About 8,900 were made. This slightly modified example is presented in blue with black interior. It is fitted with a UNI gearbox which is the same as the one fitted to the Lotus Esprit. The engine is a Rover K Series producing about 120bhp, with fast road cams, forged pistons and has a modified flywheel. It is fitted with Cobra bucket seats, Momo steering wheel and custom-made wheels. The car is tax and MoT exempt and currently SORN. The car comes with some old receipts and MoT test certificates and instructions for parts including the gearbox. A rare coupé which were often campaigned in Hill Climbing in the early 1970s.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1972 Fiat 500 Cabriolet Transmission: manualMileage:8900The Fiat 500 was produced between 1957 and 1975 with limited production of the Fiat 500 K Estate continuing until 1977. Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular car throughout Europe capturing the hearts and minds of the public. Launched as the Nuova 500, it was marketed as a cheap and practical town car. They only measured three metres long and were originally powered by a tiny 479cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term 'small car' and is considered one of the first city cars.On a kilo for kilo basis, this fabulous little Fiat 500 Supern convertible must be about as much fun as any car can be and perfect for the small streets and summer motoring. A showstopper that the vendor informs brings people out of shops and restaurants to take pictures and elicits waves from just about every passing car. Finished in beautiful unmarked yellow paintwork, we are informed this car has been fastidiously rebuilt with the engine sporting 695cc and an exhaust note to turn heads. The conversion by Supern was carried out in Germany and coupled to a total engine rebuild with new pistons, sports camshaft, electronic ignition, reinforced driveshafts and disc brakes to ensure the lively performance is kept in check. This car is unique and will certainly be the centre of attention, no matter the Ferraris and McLaren’s are parked alongside. Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.
