GANDHI MANILAL: (1892-1956) Son of Mahatma K. Gandhi, editor of the Indian Opinion, a Gujarati-English weekly publication in Durban, South Africa. A good Autograph Statement Signed, Manilal Gandhi, two pages, slim 4to, S. S. Karanja, 18th November 1949. Gandhi writes a biographical account, in part, 'Second son of Mahatma Gandhi. Born October 1892. Brought to South Africa by father 1896. Returned to India 1901. Came back to South Africa 1904. Took active part in the Passive Resistance movement led by father against racially discriminatory laws enacted against Indians by the Government of the Union of South Africa. Went to prison several times until settlement was arrived at in 1914.…Learnt hand spinning & hand weaving in pursuance of the movement led by father to revive village industries in India for the emancipation of the starving millions. In 1916 was sent by father to South Africa to help in conducting "Indian Opinion" - paper founded by father in 1904 for the social, moral, educational and political advancement of Indians and for promoting better understanding between Indians, Europeans and other nationalities in South Africa….Took active part in Civil Disobedience movement led by father against the Salt Tax in India. Spent nine months in prison….Took active part in Passive Resistance against Asiatic Land Tenure Act, enacted by the Government of the Union of South Africa, with a view to humiliating Indians as a race by segregating them and ruining them politically, socially and economically….Have never been to school. What knowledge I possess I have gained from experience. I am on my way to the World Pacifist meeting to be held in India in December and promoted by those who believe in bringing peace to the world by following the principles of non-violence and opposing all forces which tend to promote violence'. A statement with remarkable content, not least for its references to Mahatma Gandhi. Some extremely minor wrinkling and very light age wear, about VG. £200-300
EL KHOURY BECHARA: (1890-1964) First post-independence President of Lebanon, 1943 & 1943-52. T.L.S., Bechara El K , one page, folio, President Palace at Aley, 28th August 1952, to the President of the Republic of Peru, General Manuel A. Odria, in French. The document, bearing to the heading a blind embossed tree, the green cedar symbol of Lebanon, being the credentials of newly appointed Lebanese Ambassador to Peru, Nazih Lahoud, presented to the Peruvian President. Signed by President El Khoury at the foot. With blank integral leaf. VG £100-150 Manuel Arturo Odria Amoretti (1896-1974) President of Peru 1948-50 & 1950-56. He ruled as military dictator.
OSWALD LEE HARVEY: (1939-1963) Sniper accused of assassinating President John F. Kennedy on 22nd November 1963. Oswald was shot to death two days later, while under arrest, by Jack Ruby. A.L.S., xxxLee, to the verso of a postcard, Minsk, Russia, 10th May 1962, to his brother Robert Oswald, at Fort Worth, Texas. The postcard bearing also a second signature, Oswald, in Cyrillic, at the end of Oswald´s return address, in Cyrillic. To the front the card showing a colourful illustration , honouring 1st May Day, depicting musicians and dancers in native costumes. Oswald states in full `Well, nothing new to report on our move. We are just waiting for the Embassy to finish up their paper work. They are very slow. June is getting real big and cute she's almost 3 months old now. Marina says (truncated) 'Hello' and we are all well. See you soon.´ Three Soviet stamps postmarked, Minsk. 11th May 1962. Very small creasing to corners, otherwise VG £3000-4000 The present document was included in the Warren Commission as exhibit nº 321, and pictured on page 885 of volume XVI of the Warren Commission Hearings. Ruby Jack (1911-1967) Night club Operator in Dallas. On 24th November 1963, Ruby shot Oswald. First sentenced to death, and later obtaining a new trial after appealing. June Marina Oswald, Lee Harvey´s daughter, was born 15th February 1962. Coincidently, on the day Oswald wrote this postcard, May 10, 1962, Joseph P. Norbury, American Consul at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, wrote Oswald, in part, `I am pleased to inform you that the Embassy is now in a position to take final action on your wife's visa application. Therefore, you and your wife are invited to come to the Embassy at your convenience…´ 24 days later, they left Russia for America. Provenance, from the collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer (1914-2007). The family of President John F. Kennedy chose Dr. Lattimer to be the first nongovernmental medical specialist to review evidence in Kennedy's assassination.
[DACHAU]: A.L.S., on a postal card, Dachau, 20th November 1938, to Anton Oesterreich, in German. The card is sent by `Schutzhaftjude´ ("Jew protective custody") Kurt Oesterreich, son of the correspondent, `Block 30 - Room 1´ in Dachau. The prisoner writes to his father in Vienna and reports about his situation, stating `Am fine, you can be sure about this´, further asking to receive if possible a postal transfer of 15 RM to the following concentration camp address `Konzentrationslager, Dachau 3 K, lock 30, Stube 1´, and precise that it has to be sent to his name and birth date for identification. Kurt concludes saying `Please answer to me by postcard..´ and sends his regards to a woman. To the verso, the card bears six printed rules conditions regarding prisoners post mail in the Dachau concentration camp, and an ink stamp of Dachau dated. Some overall ae wear and creasing. G £100-150 The Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler, and later commanded by Rudolf Hoess.

Konrad Petrides (Viennese, 1864-1943) Design for a backdrop for the Viennese opera signed lower left "K Petrides '06" oil on panel 55 x 80cm (21 x 31in) Paint layer applied very smoothly, little impasto. Paint layer appears to be in good condition. Thick, glossy varnish layer which is slightly yellowed. Dusty surface. Condition of frame is good.
Attractive Mucur prayer rug, central Anatolia, late 18th/early 19th century, 5ft. 6in. x 4ft. 1in. 1.68m. x 1.25m. Overall wear with corrosion to browns/blacks entirely consistent with a rug of this age; reweaves and crude repairs throughout; both ends re-woven; velcro hanging band sewn to top end. As is usual with these prayer rugs, the pile is woven in the opposite direction to the design. A pretty rug of good colour worthy of sympathetic conservation.
