Final issue point by Eckel not present - 'Captain' rather than 'Capitan' as the final word on page 324, as per first state. Bound in smart full straight grain morocco binding with gilt tooling to the spine and spine labels, gilt edges, borders and dentelles; slight loss to corner of title label to spine, and hinge starting lightly to rear board. 8vo.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, first edition, Chapman & Hall, London, 1844, half calf, frontispiece, vignette half title (with corrected '£100' to signpost), and a further thirty-eight plate illustrations by 'Phiz' [Hablot K. Browne] (as called for), octavo. Condition Report : Slightly rubbed; lower joint partially split; lower hinge cleanly split open; plates with marginal toning; a few plates with lower fore-edge marginal staining; plate opposite p.448 with 5cm lower edge tear, without loss. Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting (where possible) any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
Cast, with front denticulations to lid, straight-sided tapering drum, reeded foot rim, ram's horn thumbpiece, and hollow-handle with ornate shield-shaped terminal, pseudo scattered hallmarks and maker's mark to lid and rim, capacity probably an ale quart, height 16.5cm high, diameter 12.5cm Provenance: The William K. du Pont Collection.
