In seiner Heimatstadt studiert er, gegen den Willen des Vaters, an der Kunstgewerbeschule und sammelt dort erste Erfahrungen mit avantgardistischer Kunst. Auch seine ersten abstrakten Arbeiten entstehen in dieser Zeit, bevor er 1935 mit einem Mal- und Ausstellungsverbot belegt wird. Trotz der Repressionen durch die Nationalsozialisten malt Götz heimlich und entwickelt seine künstlerische Konzeption weiter. Im Frühjahr 1945 wird unter tragischen Umständen nahezu das gesamte Frühwerk des Künstlers während der Bombenangriffe auf die Stadt Dresden zerstört. Im Jahr 1952 erfolgt eine drastische Änderung in seiner Arbeitsweise. Hier erprobt Götz erstmals seine energiegeladene, an Action Painting erinnernde Maltechnik, bei der er mit schnellen, kraftvollen Schwüngen undefinierbare Formen zu Papier bringt. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt wird der Künstler nicht mehr mit Öl malen. In der 1993 entstandenen Arbeit "Claudia" kommt Götz' einzigartiger Malstil in allerhöchster Güte zur Geltung. Durch jahrzehntelanges Perfektionieren seiner hauseigenen Technik gelingt ihm eine farblich ideal abgestimmte und bildfüllende Komposition abstrakter Form. Nicht nur als Hauptvertreter des deutschen Informel hat Karl Otto Götz die zeitgenössische Kunst geprägt, auch in seiner zwei Jahrzehnte andauernden Tätigkeit an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf hat er bleibende Spuren bei vielen seiner, heute selbst zu großer internationaler Bedeutung gekommenen, Studenten hinterlassen. Götz unterrichtet neben Größen wie Kuno Gonschior, Gotthard Graubner, Sigmar Polke und Franz Erhard Walter auch Gerhard Richter. Mit seinen einzigartigen Werken voller Kraft, Schwung und Energie wird Karl Otto Götz auch noch lange nach seinem Tod im Jahr 2017 internationale Beachtung finden. An early 20th century diamond full circle eternity ring, set with old circular-cut diamonds in platinum, size K 1/2 Condition report: Diamonds very approximately 0.04-0.05cts each, old cushion-cuts, look well-matched and front up white, estimated clarity VS-P1 (some with small black marks but only visible with a loupe). Engraved decoration rubbed to the side of the ring from having been worn next to another ring but typical of this period.

He was the joint owner of the immensely lucrative St. John's Wood estate (London) and sixth in descent from Henry Eyre, who bought the estate from the celebrated Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield in 1732.
