CAMUS ALBERT: (1913-1960) French Author and Philosopher. Nobel Prize winner in Literature, 1957. An excellent signed T.L.S., `Albert Camus´, 4to, Paris, 28th May 1954, on the Librairie Gallimard printed stationery, to Monsieur K. Bieber, Connecticut College, in French. Camus apologizes for the delay in responding, explaining `...la longue maladie d´un des miens a bouleversé mon travail... Je voudrais répondre oui à votre demande de lettre-préface, mais je suis un peu angoissé par la somme de travail en retard qui s´est accumulé et je voudrais que vous me laissiez une chance de refuser au dernier moment...´ (Translation: "...the long illness of one of mine has disrupted my work... I would like to say yes to your request for a preface letter, but I am a little distressed by the amount of backlog that has accumulated and I would like that you give me a chance to refuse at the last moment...") Further Camus refers to another work, stating `Reste le livre de Elmer Davis. Il a , selon moi, pour des raisons qui seraient trop longues à vous énumérer, peu de chance d´être publié par les Editions Gallimard...´ (Translation: "There remains the book by Elmer Davis. It has, in my opinion, for reasons which would take too long to list, little chance of being published by Editions Gallimard...") Signed in bold black ink at the conclusion. VG Elmer Holmes Davis (1890-1958) American news Reporter and Author. Best remembered as the Director of the United States Office of War Information during World War II.
[NAZI OCCULT]: WILIGUT CARL MARIA: (1866-1946) Austrian occultist and SS-Brigadefuhrer, a leading figure in the Irminism movement who was personally recruited to the SS by Heinrich Himmler. An extremely rare T.L.S., K. M. Weisthor (the alias with which he was inducted into the SS), one page, 4to, Berlin, 7th February 1938, to Heinrich Himmler, in German. Wiligut writes concerning Die Mar vom Raidenstein ('The Tidings from the Raidenstein') by Gunther Kirchhoff, stating that Kirchhoff had sent him a latter and a copy of the book, in two volumes, remarking 'Since the book appeared to me to be exceptionally informative, I went through it in detail. In so far as I can make a judgement on the basis of the written evidence, the views which Kirchhoff advances are good' and further adding 'To my knowledge, Kirchhoff has relationships with several 'initiates'. He has maintained these contacts for some years. I can give my final judgement on this work only when I have undertaken on the spot a thorough examination of his treatment of the Raidenstein. If this study confirms the correctness of Kirchhoff's treatment, I will then send you my considered view'. Initialled ('HH') by Himmler in green indelible pencil to the head of the page alongside his name, and with an official stamp and pencil annotations to the lower left corner. A letter of interesting content and excellent association. Two file holes to the upper and lower edges, not affecting the text or signatures, VGHeinrich Himmler (1900-1945) Nazi German politician, Reichsfuhrer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) 1929-45.Gunther Kirchhoff (1892-1975) German esotericist, crypto-historian and List Society member who interpreted legends as reflections of actual prehistorical incident. 'In August 1934 Weisthor brought Gunther Kirchhoff, a fellow enthusiast for Germanic prehistory with whom he had corresponded since the spring, to the attention of Himmler.....Greatly impressed by his letters, Weisthor sent the Kirchhoff correspondence to Himmler, with the excited comment that "there were still thank goodness other "initiates" besides himself who read the times correctly". He also.....followed up by sending another Kirchhoff essay.....with the vigorous recommendation that "its content was of momentous importance both with respect to our own prehistoric past and for its links with the present"......The essay described the organisation of prehistoric Germany with explicit reference to List's Armanenschaft. Kirchhoff claimed that ancient Europe had been ruled by the Great Three, namely the Uiskunig of Goslar, King Arthur of Stonehenge, and Ermanrich of Vineta or Vilna......Kirchhoff ultimately exhausted the patience of the Ahnenerbe [a Nazi German pseudoscientific think tank established by Himmler in 1935 as an SS appendage] which Himmler had ordered to study his essays......Having by now had enough of Kirchhoff's endless submissions, the Ahnenerbe took a hard line, describing him as a "fantasist of the worst kind" and his work as "rubbish" in their reports. Nevetheless, Himmler still wanted to know why Kirchhoff was being neglected by the Ahnenerbe and took a great interest in his description of a hexagonal religious complex in the countryside around the Raidenstein near Gaggenau.......Himmler insisted that the recalcitrant Ahnenerbe pursue the matter with Kirchhoff but the proposed archaeological dig was postponed indefinitely at the outbreak of the war. The real importance of this dispute is its demonstration of Himmler's essential support for a lay occultist in the face of academic opposition from his staff in the Ahnenerbe. The fact that Wesithor and Kirchhoff continued to win the attention and favour of the Reichsfuhrer-SS over their heads must have rankled badly with the members of the institute' (extracted from The Occult Roots of Nazism - Secret Aryan Cults and their Influence on Nazi Ideology by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke).Autographs of Wiligut are of the utmost rarity and we are unaware of any other example having previously appeared at auction.
BRUNEL ISAMBARD KINGDOM: (1806-1859) British civil engineer, one of the greatest figures of the Industrial Revolution. A good A.L.S., I K Brunel, three pages, 4to, n.p., 25th October 1830, to Mademoiselle de Villiers. The young Brunel writes a charming letter to his correspondent, commencing ‘Being accused of want of gallantry towards a fair foreigner I really must beg leave to address her personally in my defence. I beg therefore Mademoiselle that you will believe and assure your father that I regret sincerely and particularly on your account that I should not have had the good fortune to meet you when you have done me the honour of calling’, further explaining that his father (‘whom I presume Monsieur de Villiers particularly wished to see’) is out of town and as a consequence he is much engaged ‘and have really been from home every time that you have honoured me with a call except the last when I was engaged by appointment with some persons whom I could not possibly leave’, remarking ‘I trust therefore my character for politeness will not suffer in your estimation and that you will not leave this country with any prejudice against my countrymen the English’ and also adding ‘I beg you will inform Mr. de Villiers that I have no alteration whatsoever to suggest to his description of the tunnel but any questions which he may wish to put I shall be most happy to answer – by writing if he wishes it –‘. VGMarc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849) French-born British engineer who constructed the Thames Tunnel and was the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Thames Tunnel was built between 1825 and 1843 by Marc Isambard Brunel and his son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, using the tunnelling shield newly invented by the elder Brunel and Thomas Cochrane. The tunnel, beneath the River Thames, was originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, but was mainly used by pedestrians and became a tourist attraction. In 1869 it was converted into a railway tunnel and is still used today as part of the London Overground railway network.

KAFKA FRANZ: (1883-1924) Austro-Hungarian-born Czechoslovakian novelist and short-story writer. An extremely rare A.L.S., with his initial K, as is usually encountered, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (Prague), n.d. (1921/22), to Robert [Klopstock], in German. Kafka writes in bold pencil and informs his friend that he had been at Munzer’s with Felix the previous evening, remarking ‘The result is small compared to the hopes: a free place in the cafeteria, which gives the right to daily (supposedly very good…..) lunch and dinner and also about 150K per month from an American association. That’s all, maybe something else will happen when you’re here, but for now only the two things above are certain’, and adding that he had heard that qualified doctors had been happy with similar accommodation. Kafka also reports that Munzer was very friendly, thanks to Felix, and explains that he will make further enquiries to find somewhere for Klopstock to live, but that the summer semester will be starting soon. Kafka also makes reference to medical matters, stating ‘The visit to Munzer was even bleaker from a medical perspective……Their ignorance became terribly clear in the conversation……I’ll tell you about it later. I have been suffering from insomnia and its consequences for some time’. Autograph letters of Kafka are highly desirable and extremely rare as a result of his tragically untimely death at the age of 40, having suffered from laryngeal tuberculosis. Some minor age wear, two very minor, light stains to the right edge of the final page, and a few of the edges slightly irregularly torn, not affecting the text or signature, G Robert Klopstock (1899-1972) Hungarian physician and lung surgeon, a close friend of Franz Kafka from 1920-24. Both Klopstock and Kafka were treated for tuberculosis and the former was present at the writer’s death bed at the Kierling Sanatorium in Vienna on 3rd June 1924. Klopstock himself managed to overcome the disease and went on to continue a successful medical career in America. Egmont Munzer (1865-1924) Professor of Medicine at the German University in Prague.
MOSKALENKO KIRILL: (1902-1985) Soviet military commander of World War II, a Marshal of the Soviet Union. Moskalenko also served as Commander-in-Chief of Strategic Missile Forces 1960-62. T.L.S., K Moskalenko, in Cyrillic, one page, 4to, Moscow, 20th April 1974, to Martin Dzur, in Cyrillic. Moskalenko writes, in part, 'Please accept my warm and heartfelt congratulations on the International Workers' Day, the 1st of May, and ny best wishes for good health and great success in your activities for the benefit of your Motherland and our fraternal socialist community'. VGMartin Dzur (1919-1985) Slovak General and communist politician who served as Minister of Defence of the Czechoslovak Republic 1968-85.
GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian political and spiritual leader during the Indian independence movement. A fine, rare vintage signed sepia 6 x 4.5 photograph of Gandhi, the iconic image depicting him seated outdoors, cross-legged in a full-length pose on a rug, wearing his familiar white loin cloth (dhoti) and with a Khadi shawl over his shoulders and arms, accompanied by a number of his disciples who are seated in the immediate background. Photograph by Balvant of Raipur and Ahmedabad, and with his typescript credit and caption ‘Mahatmaji’s latest picture in his characteristic Budhist (sic) posture of sitting’ to the verso. Further dated 13th May 1931 in blue indelible pencil to the verso, which also features the blue ink signature of V. Kalyanam, Gandhi’s personal secretary. Signed (‘M K Gandhi’) by Gandhi in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the base of the image. Signed photographs of Gandhi have always been rare and remain highly desirable. Some very light, minimal age wear and with a couple of very minor, insignificant surface creases. VGOn 15th May 1931, just a matter of days after the present photograph was taken, Gandhi announced that he would attend the second Round Table Conference on Indian independence in London. In all, three Round Table Conferences would be held between 1930-32, with Gandhi only attending the second. Indeed, in December 1929 Gandhi had refused to be present at the London meetings and, in accordance with the law, the Viceroy arrested Gandhi and sent him to prison. However, Gandhi’s presence would prove vital to the success of the peace conferences, and he was the only representative of the Indian National Congress at the second Round Table conference which opened at the St. James Palace in London on 7th September 1931. Kalyanam (1922-2021) Indian freedom fighter who served as Mahatma Gandhi’s personal secretary during the last few years of Gandhi’s life (1943-48). Kalyanam was standing just behind Gandhi when the latter was shot and was the first to inform Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel of Gandhi’s death. The presence of Kalyanam’s signature on the present photograph indicates that it originated from his personal archives.

Gerrard Note: this lot is accompanied by a copy of 'A. H. Gerrard: His Life and Work' by K. L. Gerrard, 2019. this enigmatic scene was a repeated theme for the artist and another version of this landscape can be found in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The image allowed the artist to explore the physicality of the landscape, and the relationship between interior and exterior form. The artist would only have one exhibition in her lifetime, which she shared in 1931 with her husband, A.H. Gerrard at Colnaghi Gallery, London. However, Leigh-Pemberton's works are now in a large number of public collection across the UK, including the Imperial War Museum, The Courtauld and the Tate.

Karel de Nerée tot Babberich, Dutch 1880-1909 - Symbolist drawing of a woman; pencil on paper, signed lower right 'K de Nerée tot Babberich', 32.5 x 20.6 cm Note: the artist worked in a Symbolist style, much like his contemporaries Aubrey Beardsley and Jan Toorop. This is a brilliant and rare example of his work, due to his tragically short life. The artist never exhibited during his lifetime, but exhibitions have been held internationally since his death and works are now in important collections, including the Musee d'Orsay. His work was also included in the show 'Art Nouveau' at MoMA, New York in 1960, alongside Odilon Redon, Alphonse Mucha and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

H. Gerrard: His Life and Work' by K. L. Gerrard, 2019 Froy studied at the Slade where he was taught by Alfred Horace Gerrard; his sculptural, analytical approach to the figure can be seen in the way the figure in this drawing is formed out of geometric lines. Important paintings in the same style are found in the collections of the Hepworth Wakefield, the Arts Council and the Tate. He exhibited at the Hanover Gallery in 1952 in a joint show with Lucien Freud.
Kenneth Hall, British 1913-1946 - Untitled (Yellow figure), c.1942; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Hall', 40.7 x 29.3 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance: the Estate of Basil Rakoczi Note: this piece was probably painted by the artist around 1942 when he was living in Dublin. He was experimenting with different forms and looking to develop a technique of painting that reflected the sense of expressionism and symbolism that he and Rakoczi were experimenting with. At times a troubled figure he sometimes viewed the world as amorphous and shifting, nothing clearly defined. This chimed with his intellectual view on society as needing to move to a natural state of anarchy. Basil Rákóczi (19081979) and his partner, Kenneth Hall (19131946), founded The White Stag Group of modernist artists in 1935. Influenced by Surrealism and founded in London, they moved to Ireland in late 1939, following the start of the Second World War. There the Group flourished, gaining both local and continental members, including Nano Reid and Patrick Scott. Rakoczi and Halls work brought modernism to Dublin and they gained a sizeable and positive reputation for their work, which focused on psychological states and esoteric myth and symbols. Instrumental to both artists careers, was the influential dealer Lucy Wertheim, who ran a celebrated gallery in Mayfair during the 1930s, one of the spaces focused on young artists working in a Modern idiom. Wertheim promoted major figures such as Barbara Hepworth, Christopher Wood, Frances Hodgkins and Henry Moore at an early age, but she is perhaps most known for her support of a diverse group of lesser known artists, many of whom worked in either expressionistic or faux-naïve styles. An exhibition of Wertheims legacy 'A Life in Art & Reuniting the Twenties Group' was recently on display at Towner Eastbourne, UK, including works by both Hall and Rákóczi in 2022.

° Journal of Emily Eden (1797-1869), novelist and traveller; 1 January - 29 March 1828Paper book with marbled edges in a parchment binding, 18 x 12 cm, with label of the supplier J Bowen, wholesale stationer, 315 Oxford Street. The journal opens with Emily’s departure from a long stay with her sister Mrs Colvile at Langley Farm at Beckenham in Kent. The context for this brief period in her life was the fall of the government led for five months by Frederick John Robinson (1782-1859), first Viscount Goderich and first earl of Ripon, and the character of Goderich’s wife Sarah, often the butt of Emily’s acerbic comments.Born into the Whig aristocracy and an acute political observer, Emily had the opportunity to follow the crisis at first hand. She had a low opinion of the premier – ‘Theresa Villiers … said that Lord Goderich had resigned the day before, and that the King had sent to the Duke of Wellington to desire him to make a new Government. It was hardly possible to regret the last, it was so weak, and Lord Goderich so inefficient and ridiculous, chiefly owing to Sarah, but the triumph of one’s enemies is always an ugly business.’ Emily’s position also provides a privileged view of machinations in the royal household: at dinner on 12 January Lord Lansdowne described ‘the whole thing as an intrigue between Mr [John Charles] Herries and Sir William Knighton [the king’s physician and private secretary] – the instances he gave of Sir William Knighton’s influence over the King are quite wonderful.’ On 22 January ‘Lawrence Peel told me that the K[ing] was at first cold to his brother [Robert Peel], but after a little while began mimicking Lord Anglesey and then all the late ministry.’
