L'œuvre intime, qui regroupe ses dessins au format A4 réalisés compulsivement au stylo-bille sur des feuilles volantes, qu'il surnommait ses « scraboutchas », sont l'expression de ses préoccupations les plus personnelles. On y retrouve les thèmes qui l'obsèdent depuis l'adolescence : la Shoah, la judéité, le sexe, le crime, ... Il y dresse des inventaires – meubles, vêtements, fétiches africains, revolvers –, des listes – officiers nazis, rescapés de la Shoah, camps de concentration, assassinés, suicidés, artistes ou écrivains qu'il admire – mêlés à des dessins d'une expressivité désarmante. Ces thèmes composent une sorte de mythologie personnelle, entre fiction et réalité. Ils symbolisent son esprit de révolte, sa colère contre l'antisémitisme, renvoient à son identité de gangster et aux crimes qu'il revendique, jusqu'à celui qui mènera à son assassinat en 1986, le vol d'un Modigliani. Les quatre dessins présentés datent de cette année où il décède à l'âge de 25 ans, intense aussi bien sur le plan artistique que biographique. Dans l'un des dessins, il illustre, à la manière des cartes portulan du XVe siècle, le voyage qu'il effectue cette année-là au Congo, pays d'origine de sa femme Claudia. Il y ramène des statuettes, qu'il s'empresse de dessiner, aux côtés de croix gammées et de mots yiddish affirmant ses racines juives. Ces quatre dessins, Mandelbaum les donne l'année de sa mort à Elie, un ami avec qui il collabore notamment sur la revue artistique et littéraire Revue et Corrigée (1978 – 1986) entre 1983 et 1986. Il y publie des dessins à plusieurs reprises, en compagnie d'artistes tels que Gabriel Belgeonne, Paul Trajman, ou encore son père Arié Mandelbaum. En 1985, son ami Elie lui passe commande d'un projet d'affiche pour Le Procès, une pièce de théâtre adaptée du roman de Franz Kafka interprétée par la Magnanerie, groupe théâtral de l'U.P.J.B. (l'Union des Progressistes Juifs de Belgique), et dans laquelle il jouait. Mandelbaum livre ainsi son interprétation du récit de Kafka et réalise Die portrait von Kafka, dédicacé « pour El[l]ie », d'après une photographie célèbre de l'auteur pragois à l'âge de 5 ans. Il semble également y avoir représenté l'un des agents ayant procédé à l'arrestation injustifiée de Joseph K., le protagoniste du roman victime d'une situation cauchemardesque et sans issue. Il n'est pas surprenant que ce roman ait résonné chez l'artiste, notamment pour ses références à l'antisémitisme et sa critique de l'ordre. Ze bevatten thema's die hem sinds zijn adolescentie obsedeerden: de Shoah, joods zijn, seks, misdaad, etc. Hij maakte inventarissen - van meubels, kleren, Afrikaanse fetisjen, revolvers - en lijsten - van nazi-officieren, overlevenden van de Shoah, concentratiekampen, vermoorde mensen, zelfmoordenaars, kunstenaars en schrijvers die hij bewonderde - gemengd met ontwapenend expressieve tekeningen. Deze thema's vormen een soort persoonlijke mythologie, ergens tussen fictie en werkelijkheid. Ze symboliseren zijn rebelse geest, zijn woede over het antisemitisme, zijn identiteit als gangster en de misdaden waarvoor hij de verantwoordelijkheid opeiste, waaronder de misdaad die leidde tot zijn moord in 1986, de diefstal van een Modigliani. De vier tentoongestelde tekeningen dateren uit het jaar waarin hij op 25-jarige leeftijd stierf, een intens jaar zowel artistiek als biografisch. In een van de tekeningen illustreert hij, op de manier van vijftiende-eeuwse zijn rebelse geest, de reis die hij dat jaar maakte naar Congo, het land van herkomst van zijn vrouw Claudia. Hij bracht beeldjes mee, die hij haastig tekende naast swastika's en Jiddische woorden die zijn Joodse wortels bevestigen. In het jaar van zijn dood gaf Mandelbaum deze vier tekeningen aan Elie, een vriend met wie hij van 1983 tot 1986 samenwerkte aan het artistieke en literaire tijdschrift Revue et Corrigée (1978-1986).
