Quattro capilettera xilografici ornati su sei linee, quelli impressi alle carte a2r e g1r miniati in azzurro e in giallo. Numerose iniziali xilografiche lombarde più piccole. Foro di tarlo alle prime quattro carte, con conseguente perdita di alcune lettere, evidenti macchie di muffa ai primi tre fascicoli, lieve gora al margine interno del volume. II: Segnatura: A⁶ B⁴ C⁸ D-E⁴ F⁸ G-H⁴ I⁸ K-L⁴ M⁸ N-O⁴ P⁸ Q⁶. carte [6], LXXX, [2]. Capilettera xilografici. Gore, evidenti macchie di muffa. Legatura cinquecentesca in mezza pelle su assicelle di legno, tracce dell'originale laccio in pelle e del fermaglio. Tracce di titolo manoscritto al piatto anteriore. Mancanze al dorso, abrasioni al piatto posteriore. Annotazioni manoscritte in inchiostro bruno di antica mano.I: Seconda edizione, la prima ottenibile, dell'opera del poeta originario di Sora Domenico Farina (1460-1528) e dedicata all'amico e protettore Marcantonio Sabellico. Domenico Farina venne accolto nel 1478 nell'Accademia Romana di Pomponio Leto, dove scelse il nome di Domenico Palladio Sorano, e qui si laureò nel 1484. L'eleganza poetica dei suoi epigrammi, che gli consacrarono la fama, erano tanto apprezzati nell'ambiente dell'Accademia Romana che fu proprio Palladio Sorano a dettare l'epitaffio che venne posto sulla pietra tombale di Pomponio Leto nel 1497.La princeps dell'opera venne stampata a Venezia il 4 settembre 1495, edizione a noi pervenuta in un unico esemplare, oggi preservato a Parigi, presso la Bibliothèque Mazarine (GW M29128). I capilettera - ornati e lombardi - confermano che l'edizione venne stampata da Bernardino Vitali per il Sessa. Edizione di grande rarità, solo tre esemplari sono censiti nelle biblioteche istituzionali americane e solo un'altra copia è stata venduta in asta nell'ultimo secolo.II: Rara edizione delle dieci Ecloghe redatte dal carmelitano mantovano Battista Spagnoli (1447-1516), che le compose tra gli anni giovanili di studio a Padova e l'ingresso nell'ordine del Carmelo. L'editio princeps venne stampata a Mantova nel 1498 con il titolo Adolescentia. L'opera venne letta e assai apprezzata da Erasmo, che definì lo Spagnoli Virgilio cristiano. "Il maggior titolo di gloria e d'immortalità, che possegga il Mantovano, sono le dieci Egloghe, uno dei monumenti più notevoli della poesia umanistica d'Italia e d'Europa" (V. Zabughin. Un beato poeta (Battista Spagnoli, il Mantovano), in «L'Arcadia» 1 (1918), p. 79). La straordinaria fortuna delle Egloghe è da attribuire, oltre al loro valore stilistico, all'utilizzo del genere antico quale veicolo delle istanze riformatrici, che resero la presente opera "un testo curriculare in molte scuole inglesi, sancito dai programmi [...] Lo stesso Shakespeare, in Love's Labour's Lost (atto IC, scena II), cita il «good old Mantuan», facendo pronunciare ad Oloferne l'incipit della sua prima ecloga". Losses to the spine, the lower cover rather abraded. An early hand added a few manuscript notes in brown ink. I: Second edition, the first available, of the poetical work by Domenico Farina from Sora (1460-1528), and dedicated to his friend and patron Marcantonio Sabellico. Farina entered in 1478 the Roman Academy (Accademia Romana) founded by Pomponio Leto, adopting the nickname of Domenico Palladio Sorano. Owing to their elegance, his epigrams were highly praised in the Roman milieu, and Farina was also responsible for the epitaph inscribed on Leto's grave. The first edition of the Epigrammata appeared in Venice on 4 September, recorded in only one copy preserved in the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris (GW M29128). The style of the woodcut initials embellishing the volume confirms the attribution of printing to Bernardino Vitali. The edition offerred here is of the greatest rarity, only three copies are recorded in US institutional libraries, and only a copy was seen at auction in the 20th-century.II: Rare edition of the ten Ecloghe by the Mantuan Battista Spagnoli (1447-1516), who composed them before he entered the Carmelite order. The first edition was printed in Mantua in 1498, under the title Adolescentia. Erasmus of Rotterdam was among its readers, and called Farina 'the Christian Virgil'. The work enjoyed a wide popularity, and was especially praised by Shakespeare, who included the first verses from one ecloga by the "good old Mantuan" in his Love's Labour's Lost. Frontespizio racchiuso entro cornice xilografica ornata, ripetuta tre volte. Capilettera xilografici. Bell'esemplare, piccola mancanza al margine esterno della carta AA4, fioriture e tracce di polvere al frontespizio. Legatura settecentesca in vitello, piatti inquadrati da triplice filetto dorato, agli angoli interni quattro ferri floreali, anch'essi impressi in oro. Dorso a cinque nervi, titolo impresso in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso al secondo scomparto, i rimanenti decorati da ferri dorati. Tagli spruzzati in rosso. Esemplare proveniente dalla collezione del conte di Macclesfield, come testimoniato dall'ex libris al contropiatto anteriore e dal suo timbro a secco al recto della carta AA2. Al frontespizio nota manoscritta '12 febr. 1696'. Sporadici marginalia e sottolineature.Prima edizione di questa collezione di testi dell'erudito Stefano Negri, profondo conoscitore di greco e latino, dedicata (c. A2r) dall'autore ad alcuni tra i più eminenti personaggi dell'epoca, come ad esempio Jean Grolier. Il volume contiene un insieme di traduzioni e alcune operette di carattere erudito, mitologico, filosofico e poetico tra le quali figurano i Commentarioli in aurea carmina Pythagorae, un'epistola indirizzata al medico milanese Giovanni Marliani e cinque Prefationes, tre ad Omero, una a Pindaro e una a Tito Livio. Oltre a questi testi sono presenti anche il De unguentis, il De meretricibus insignis, il De victo Pythagorico, De vino e il De nimia obsoniorum appetentia, queste ultime tre qui in prima edizione e di notevole importanza per la letteratura gastronomica. Stefano Negri, originario di Corte Maggiore nei pressi di Cremona, era noto anche col nome di Stephanos Melas, e occupò dal 1520 la cattedra di greco dello studio di Milano che era stata di Demetrio Calcondila. Durante l'occupazione francese della città si riunì intorno a questo erudito una cerchia di uomini dotti e illustri, della quale facevano parte anche Jean Grolier e il segretario di Francesco I, che compaiono spesso come dedicatari delle sue opere. Il Negri cadde in disgrazia dopo la cacciata dei francesi dalla città lombarda e venne allontanato dall'insegnamento. I suoi lavori consistono principalmente nella traduzione di testi classici o di opere ispirate all'antichità tra le quali si ricorda il Dialogo tra un venditore di libri e uno studente preposto, insieme ad altri scritti del suo maestro Demetrio Calcondila, al celebre lessico greco delle Suidas impresso nel 1499.Argelati, Bibl. From Macclesfield library, as the ex libris on the front pastedown and stamp in blind on the AA2r attest. The manuscript note '12 febr. 1696' on the title-page. A few marginalia and underlinings.First edition of this collection of works by the humanist Stefano Negri, also known as Stephanos Melas, and dedicated to leading figures of the age, such as Jean Grolier. The publication includes translations, and philosophical, mythological or poetic writings, among others the Commentarioli in aurea carmina Pythagorae, an epistle addressed to the Milanese physician Giovanni Marliani, and five Prefationes, three to Homer, and the other two to Pindar and Titus Livius respectively. Especially noteworthy are the writings appeared here for the first time in print, and entitled De victo Pythagorico, De vino, and De nimia obsoniorum appetentia, notable and influential examples of gastronomic literature.
