Two 'Farewell Addresses' to Sir William Grey upon his departure from India in 1871 The first contained within a bamboo scroll case with white metal mounts, marked Cooke & Kelvey Calcutta, founded 1857, the second within a white metal presentation box, further enclosed within a mahogany travelling case, stamped J. M. Edmond Calcutta, together with another, smaller example, addressed to Sir Ashley Eden upon his departure in 1882, Hamilton & Co, Calcutta 1811-1971, the largest presentation case 63cm long (3) Footnotes: Sir William Grey (1818-1878) was an English administrator who worked with the East India Company and served as lieutenant-governor of Bengal from 1867 until 1871. In 1886 his daughter, Sybil, married Sir William Eden, 7th Baronet of West Auckland. Their third son, Antony, went on to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the 1950s. Sir Ashley Eden (1831-1887) was an official and diplomat in British India, and the third son of Robert Eden, 3rd Baron Auckland. He was appointed secretary to the government of Bengal and held the post for eleven years, and his tenure coincided with Grey's leadership. Eden followed in Grey's footsteps and went on to be the lieutenant-governor of Burma from 1877 to 1882. Engravings read: 1. Farewell Address / to / The Hon Sir William Grey K. C. S. Art Deco diamond single stone ring with a round old European cut diamond estimated to weigh approximately 2.5cts in eight claw setting flanked by six baguette cut diamonds to the stepped shoulders on platinum shank. Ring size M.The ring is in excellent condition commensurate with age. The diamond is a lively bright stone, it measures appropriately 9.12-9.15mm x 4.35mm. Small inclusion towards the centre of the stone when viewed with a loupe but not visible to the naked eye. The colour is difficult to estimate, possibly K/L. Setting and shank in good condition, not hallmarked. Weighs approximately 3.7 grams.

Antique French blue sapphire and diamond three stone ring with an oval mixed cut blue sapphire measuring approximately 7.5mm x 6.1mm x 3.75mm deep, flanked by two old cut diamonds in rub-over setting with finely pierced foliage, engraved gold shoulders on gold shank. Ring size P.Very good condition commensurate with age. The sapphire is in good condition with no obvious inclusions. The diamonds are estimated to weigh approximately 0.15cts each, estimated colour J/K, estimated clarity SI2-I2, one chip/indented natural. Not hallmarked, appears to be 18ct gold and either silver or white gold decoration. Weighs approximately 3.3 grams.

Late Victorian opal and diamond heart shape ring with a heart-shape opal surrounded by a border of old cut and rose cut diamonds in silver setting with two further diamonds to the foliate scroll shoulders on gold shank, ring size K.The heart shaped cluster measures approximately 10.2mm x 9.8mm. The opal measures approximately 7mm x 6mm. The opal is in good condition, no chips or cracks, light surface scratches commensurate with age. The opal has a good play of colour, displaying green, blue and pink tones. One single cut diamond to the shoulder might be a replacement stone but the rest of the diamonds are all old cut stones and original to the setting. The shank has been enlarged and strengthened with the addition of a gold slip inserted to the inside of the shank, associated solder, fairly crude. Weighs approximately 3.5 grams.
