[VICTORIAN CARD GAME] - THE NEW GAME OF ILLUSTRATED PROVERBS (published by John Jaques and Son, London, circa 1860), a complete set of 64 cards comprising 12 hand-coloured cards with illustrations by H K Browne ("Phiz"), one card with printed rules, and 51 cards printed with a central decorative cartouche with printed proverbs above, all cards with plain light-green backs, in very good condition. In Victorian Britain, learning the ideals of good behaviour came to be regarded as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic. This game of 63 cards (with a further card explaining the rules) used proverbs with humorous illustrations as a teaching aid.
