Manuscript of a Curious Victorian TaleAnomoymous: "Mokeanna or The White Witness. A Tale of the Times." Oblong 8vo album, 31 ff + 5 hand drawn illustrations.A short story burlesquing the creepy tales beloved of Victorians, in which an alien invader lands from the sea at Rutland (in reality a landlocked county) steals a farmer's donkey (the "moke Anna"), kidnaps the wife of the local squire, and is then pursued by a mob of angry peasants who seem more intent on recovering the donkey than rescuing the lady. If Flann O'Brien had written Dracula..."Mokeanna" was the brainchild of the comic writer F.C. Burnand, who wrote the story as a parody of the popular tales published in Reynold's Miscellany and persuaded five well-known illustrators to provide each of the drawings: John Gilbert of the Illustrated London News, Hablot K. Browne (Dicken's "Phiz"), Charles Keene, George du Maurier and John Everett Millais. "Mokeanna" was serialised in Punch during February and March 1863 and proved a great hit with the readers. This appears to be a contemporary transcript, neatly written and with the five illustrations meticulously copied. As a manuscript, w.a.f. (1)
