Museale Bronzeplastik "Alexander v. Humboldt."Bronzeguss, mit fein schimmernder goldbrauner Naturpatina. Mehrteilig gegossen und verschraubt. Ganzfigurige Darstellung des Forschers in legerem Kontrapost auf einen von Efeu umschlungenen Baumstumpf gestützt, im angewinkelten Arm ein Buch haltend, auf dem Rücken graviert "COSMOS". Auf der Plinthe vorne graviert "Alexander v. Humboldt." Hinten auf der Plinthe eingeschlagen "C. WOLGAST FEC: 1851 C. FISCHER FUD:" Kleiner Ausbruch an der hinteren rechten Ecke, die Plinthe rückseitig etwas verbogen. H 51,5 cm, Plinthe H 3,9, B 17, T 16,4 cm.Das Modell von Carl Wolgast, der Guss von Christoph Heinrich Fischer, 1851.In der Versteigerung des Nachlasses von Alexander von Humboldt wurde als Lot 335 eine "Statuette Alex. v. Humboldt's. Bronce. 19 1/2" aufgerufen, bei der es sich vermutlich um dieses Exemplar handelt (s. "Alexander von Humboldt's Kunst-Nachlaß, welcher am 17. September 1860 und den folgd. Tagen, täglich von 9-1 Uhr Vormittags zu Berlin, in dem Hause Oranienburger Strasse 67 durch den K. gerichtl. und aussergerichtl. Auctions-Commissarius für Bücher und Kunstsachen Th. Müller, gegen sofortige Zahlung in Preuss. Gelde versteigert werden soll. Berlin 1860."). Unter den insgesamt 490 Lots befanden sich einige Skulpturen, aber auch Zeichnungen, Medaillen, Fotografien, Mineralien, Gebrauchsobjekte, sein Schreibtisch und eine Sammlung von 160 Diplomen, die dem Forscher verliehen wurden. Die bedeutende Bronzeplastik, entstanden zur Lebzeit Alexander von Humboldts (1769 - 1859), stellt ihn unprätentiös als Gelehrten und Lehrer dar, ohne die Orden und Ehrenzeichen, die er bereits zu diesem Zeitpunkt innehatte. Geknöpfter Gehrock und geschulterte Manteldraperie verweisen quasi als Attribute auf seine Reisen und den wiederholten Aufbruch zu weiteren Entdeckungen. Der Titel des Buchs, "Cosmos", gibt einen Hinweis auf seine enzyklopädische Forschung und internationale Bedeutung.Der Berliner Bildhauer Carl Wolgast (1819 - 1876) war als Schüler von Christian Daniel Rauch auf den Akademieausstellungen von 1844 bis 1874 vertreten. Die Statuette Alexander von Humboldts ist nur in Zinkguss bei Thieme/Becker erwähnt, ein Exemplar in Bronze war lange nicht bekannt. Die herausragende Qualität der Darstellung hat auch König Friedrich IV. begeistert, da Alexander von Humboldt in seinem an den Berliner Museumsdirektor Ignaz von Olfers gerichteten und kürzlich publizierten Brief den Wunsch des Königs mitteilte, für ihn, den König, einen weiteren Bronzeguss der Statuette zu fertigen (Nelken, Alexander von Humboldt, Bildnisse und Künstler – Eine dokumentierte Ikonographie, Berlin 1980, S. 141):"Dem König und der Königin hat meine Statuette von dem jungen Bildhauer Wolgast (Münzstr. No. 15) so gefallen als ein Rauch oder Kaulbach. Der König hat mir befohlen, bei Wolgast die Statuette in Bronze zu bestellen, und das Ihnen, teurer Freund zu melden, damit Sie gütigst die Bezahlung einst angeben, ich hoffe zum Vorteil des recht ausgezeichneten Künstlers, der bei Rauch gearbeitet hat."LiteraturVgl. dieselbe Figur in Zinkguss in der Sammlung Stadtmuseum Berlin, Inv.Nr. Simpson Of The Royal Air Force. Comes Together With Flying Log Book, Roll Of Honour And Original Photographs. SGT J.J. SIMPSON Was Killed In Action On The 14/06/1943. A Description Of Final Flight As Follows : Lancaster W4992 took off from RAF Wickenby at 2313 hours on the night of 14/15th June 1943 to bomb Oberhausen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it failed to return to base. It was later established that the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire on its run in towards the target and it exploded and crashed near Monchengladbach, Germany. He was a semi-regular guest on the 1990s comedy series Cybill, and he had a small role as U.S. Marshal Gil Tatum in Django Unchained (2012). Wopat also has a recurring role as Sheriff Jim Wilkins on the television series Longmire.
