•A BOX OF 21 ASSORTED PRINTED BOOKS by Virgil, Goethe, H. James, M, Proust, A. Swinburne, R. Southey etc, mainly 20th Century editions, all but one with an original crayon or pencil sketch by James Wood on the flyleaf (figures studies, portraits, town scenes etc), many of the volumes signed and/or annotated by him (21 vols) * James Wood (1889-1975), or Jas as he was always known, was a painter and writer, an aesthete who read history at Cambridge before studying painting in Paris and Munich. A remarkable man of wide-ranging interests, he co-wrote The Foundations of Aesthetics with C K Ogden and I A Richards, and the autobiographical New World Vistas (1926). In the 1930s he made a detailed study of Persian art, learnt Persian and became art adviser to the Persian government. He was fascinated by colour harmony and much influenced by Kandinsky, but was no mere theoretician, as the works gathered here amply demonstrate. A hugely inventive painter, he took everyday subjects and investigated them in terms of light and colour while ensuring they retained their identity as real things. He painted landscape, portraits, the urban scene, and was a key member of the Carline circle of artists to which Stanley and Gilbert Spencer belonged. (Stanley painted Jas lying on a tomb in The Resurrection, Cookham, 1924-7.) He exhibited infrequently, but had solo exhibitions at Zwemmer, the Leicester Galleries and Blond Fine Art. Far less known than he deserves, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a fine example of his work. Andrew Lambirth These pictures have been consigned for sale by the artist's family. ++ Some with broken spines and shelf wear
A three stone diamond ring, the three graduating old cut diamonds in spaced rub over gypsy settings total estimated weight of diamonds 0.60ct, plain unmarked shank tests for 18ct gold, size R, gross weight 6.9g The diamonds are bright and lively with the pleasant individuality of 19th century cuts. The setting makes measuring inexact due to the sides being hidden, & colour and clarity assessments also as it is impossible to see the stones from all sides. With those provisos, these are the ESTIMATES:Dia 1 - 5.1 x 4.6 x 3.5 mm, I/J, P1 (no black inclusions)dia 2 - 4.1 x 3.6 x 2.5 mm, I/J, SI or betterdia 3 - 4.2 x 3.6 x 2.7 mm, J/K, P3 (no black inclusions) The setting has wear and scuffs commensurate with age and having been worn with other rings, but is sound and bright.
A mid 19th century seed pearl cluster ring together with a five stone pearl ring, the first with a closed back flowerhead set with a green hardstone centre and eight seed pearl petals to flared shoulders bright cut engraved with scrolling foliage, and fluted shank, size J, length of ring head 11mm; the second of typically Edwardian design with a line of five graduated 2.8-3.8mm pearls, claw set to a pierced gallery and carved tapered shoulders, yellow metal shank stamped '18', size K; none of the pearls have been tested, but are thought to be natural (2)
A Victorian single stone gypsy ring set in 18ct gold, the round brilliant cut diamond of approximately 0.50ct star set to tapering shoulders and plain shank, Chester hallmarks for 18ct gold, 1884, size R½, gross weight 6.6g Within the limitations of the setting, the diamond measures approximately 5.35mm diameter, 3.28mm depth. The yellow gold all around the stone makes colour assessment extremely difficult - possibly J/K; the stone is bright and lively with no eye-visible, large or glaring inclusions, perhaps SI1 or even VS2. The setting has wear and tear commensurate with its age, and the shank is relatively thin at the back, though still robust. The diamond is a 20th century cut so not contemporary with the setting.
A single stone old cut diamond ring, the plain shank swelling at the front and cast into a sunburst of raised rays, the tips of which form claws to hold the old cushion cut diamond, yellow metal stamped '18ct', size N; estimated weight of diamond approximately 0.50cts The ring is in good condition for its age with appropriate scuffs and wear but nothing material. The diamond is secure though several of the claws are at their extremity; the metal tests for 18ct gold. The setting makes assessment of the diamond extremely difficult: the colour is approximately J/K; there are some chips, nibbles or naturals around the girdle, and a small table nick, and loupe-visible abrasion, but internally the stone looks clean, probably VS.
A mid 20th century diamond double clip brooch, the two asymmetrical but identical pieces of pierced, swirling and curling design, abutting at a diagonal, set throughout with round brilliant, single and baguette cut diamonds, in unmarked white metal which tests for platinum; each half is hand engraved with an untraced design number 'K-2898'; each half with twin pins and one hook, frame with single pin and clasp with safety catch; length 4.3cm, gross weight 14.3g, total estimated weight of diamonds approximately 1.60cts, cased
