Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Maine This map of the new state of Maine was beautifully engraved by J. Yeager. It shows the state with only nine counties and a population of less than 300,000. There is good detail of the extensive system of lakes and rivers. Wagon roads are limited to the southern portion, most connecting the coastal towns. Bangor and Canaan, as well as many small villages are named. A handsome map on a full folio sheet (20.4 x 16.7"") with surrounding text giving historical, physical, and political information. A table lists all governors current to Albion K. Parris, 1821; from 1652 to 1820, Maine was under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts. Original color with archivally repaired centerfold separations at top and bottom. A previous owner has attached relevant newspaper clippings to the verso, of which there is faint show-through on recto. 16.6"" W x 20.4"" H Carey & Lea, 1822
Islandia This is one of the most spectacular of all decorative maps, filling the Icelandic seas with a Boschian array of sea monsters. A lettered key on the verso gives descriptions of the creatures. Some of the beasts can be linked to a real sea creature, particularly whales and walruses, while others are wholly fantastic, such as the aquatic hyena (D) and seagoing cow (K). A Latin note near the coast explains a group of foxes holding each others tails suspended down a cliff as follows: Sly little foxes reaching for bird`s nests to rob. The upper right corner accurately depicts polar bears gamboling and fighting on ice flows, while below them an expanse of driftwood makes its way to the northern coast. Driftwood was and still is an important natural resource in coastal Iceland after it floats down from Siberia. Ambergris is noted as well (O), with the description on the verso linking it to sperm whales. The interior of the island shows its mountainous topography, including Mt. Hekla in all its volcanic fury, spewing flames and rocks. Ortelius attributed the cartography to Andres Sorensen Vedel, a Danish historian, who acquired the information from a now lost map by Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson. The map was published in the 1595 Latin edition with descriptive Latin text on the verso. A fine impression with full original color on watermarked paper, light soiling in the blank margins, and a centerfold separation confined to the bottom blank margin. There is as a tear in bottom blank margin that has been closed on recto with old paper. Remnants of hinge tape on verso along edges of sheet. 13.3"" W x 19.4"" H Ortelius, Abraham 1585
Bergen This handsome bird`s-eye view depicts the town of Bergen, the only Norwegian city depicted in Braun & Hogenberg`s Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The view was created by Hieronymus Scholeus. The city of Bergen was founded in 1070 and had become one of the four most important trading posts to the German Hanseatic merchants by the 16th century. A legend identifies over 20 locations in the view, including the fortress of Bergenhus (A) and St. Mary`s Church (K). A gallows appears to the left of the city with a ladder leaning against it. French manuscript text on verso. Attractive color on watermarked paper with some show-through of text on verso. There is a dark pencil line in left blank margin and several tiny holes, all away from image. 12.9"" W x 18.7"" H Braun & Hogenberg, 1597

Chopin, Henri, Musiker, Tonkünstler, Dichter und Graphiker, 1922-2008. 29 `dactylopoèmes`, sämtl. signiert und datiert, tlw. hs. bezeichnet. Schreibmaschinenschrift in Schwarz, Rot, Blau und Grün, 4 Bll. zusätzl. mit Wasserfarben überarbeitet, 2 Bll. mit Collagen. 1978-82. - Vereinz. gering fleckig.Fascinating collection of impressive graphic works by the French artist Henri Chopin, a key figure of European post-war avant-garde. Typewriter font in black, red, blue and green, 4 ll. additionally worked over with watercolors, 2 ll. with collages. All in all 29 loose leaves. 29,5 : 21 cm (1 l. ca. 26 : 20,5 cm). - Minor isolated stains.
