Maqbool Fida Husain (Indian, 1913-2011)Untitled (Horse) signed in Devanagiri lower left, executed circa early 1960soil on canvas56 x 40cm (22 1/16 x 15 3/4in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection of George and Norma Dove-Edwin, UK; Purchased by the vendor's between 1966-1968 when they were stationed in India.CompareFor a similar work sold in these rooms, see Islamic and Indian Art including Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, London, 23rd October 2017, lot 309.George Dove-Edwin (1928-2009) was a Nigerian Diplomat, in the country's post-independence years; Nigeria gained independence on 1st October 1960. He was well known in Britain, having served as the high commissioner in the UK from 1986-1992, the longest tenure of any Nigerian ambassador. He improved relations between the two nations whilst protecting national and African interests. Prior to his term in the UK, he was in the Nigerian foreign service, and he was posted in Washington, Egypt, India, Japan, Sweden and France. It was during his travels to these countries that he acquired art works from the local art scene, and it was in the course of his 2 year stay in India between 1966-1968 that he purchased the present lot, the Husain horse. The horse has been one of the key elements in Husain's oeuvre since he first depicted the animal in 1951. The inspiration for his horses came from various sources, some of which include the classical and folk tradition of the Panchtantra and Jataka tales, Indian sculpture, pre-historic rock paintings, the iconic Duldul, Imam Husain's horse in the battle of Karbala and the Bankura horse of West Bengal. The horse in the present lot, clearly shows the influence of the traditional Bankura horse, with its distinctive elongated and erect neck, and raised ears. The blues deployed in the background and to create the almost translucent figure accentuates the white of the horse, drawing the viewers attention to the horse, the protagonist of the painting. This work dates from the 60s, which was one of the most bellicose decades in the history of modern India. In several works executed in the late 1960s/early 1970s Husain's horses reflect the mood of aggression and violence felt throughout the country. The depiction of this horse is entirely in line with those other works and is infused with the same feeling of aggression and anger. The horse can also be viewed as a victim of the violence and this is evident in the present lot as the nude blue figure is piercing the horse. For works of a similar style dating from the same period, which can be found in the collections of Brian Brown, a Private Collection and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, see K. Bikram Singh, Maqbool Fida Husain, New Delhi, 2008, pp.172-184, figures 147, 150 and 160.'Like his bulls, spiders and lamps on women's thighs, boastful snakes and blackly passionate suns, Husain's horses are subterranean creatures. Their nature is not intellectualized; it is rendered as sensation or as abstract movement, with a capacity to stir up vague premonitions and passions, in a mixture of ritualistic fear and exultant anguish.' (R. Bartholomew and S. Kapur, Husain, Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1972, p. 42)For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

These heads are all votive pieces linked to the cult of Egyptian deities within the Roman Empire, and are probably a product of a workshop in Alexandria. The deity’s headpiece comprises two feathers of the Egyptian goddess Maat, the personification of the concepts of truth, harmony and justice, and between them the sun disk, which connects the deity with the sun god Ra, along with Sokar, Ptah and Osiris. The amphora of the young boy looks Hellenistic. The wine amphora carried by the young boy (maybe another representation of Harpokrates himself) is associated with the ‘festival of drunkenness’ and the conception of Harpokrates. 17th century A.D. An Orthodox wooden icon with a slightly curved profile, polychrome painted scene depicting the Holy Trinity with Jesus Christ to the left, God the Father to the right and the Holy Spirit above them depicted as a dove; both figures nimbate, dressed in gold and brocade, their hands resting on a large globus cruciger, a jewelled Gospel beneath the hand of Christ; each corner with a symbol of the Evangelists: angel, ox, eagle and lion with Greek inscriptions around them: near the nimbus of Jesus the Greek letters 'IC' (Iesus) 'XC' (Christos), inside the halo three letters representing the continuous divine self-existence of Christ as God (O ?N = The Only One who always exists); above the head of the dove an abbreviated Greek inscription for '? ???? ??????' (The Holy Trinity). See Rothemund, B., Handbuch der Ikonenkunst, Munich 1966, p.204, for the well consolidated icon of the New Testament Holy Trinity; Chatzidakis, N. (ed.), Da Candia a Venezia: Icone Greche in Italia, XV-XVI secolo, Athens, 1993, p.185, cat.47; Staikos, K. (ed.), ‘The Holy Trinity’ in From the Incarnation of Logos to the Theosis of Man: Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Icons From Greece, Psychiko, 2008, p.50, cat.no.22. 2.1 kg, 44 x 32 cm (17 1/4 x 12 1/2 in). Charterhouse auctioneers, Sherborne, Dorset, UK. Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. The New Testament Trinity derives from two Biblical passages: Mark 16:19 and Luke 22:69. The latter reads: 'But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God' (Luke 22:69). Our icon illustrates this Biblical phrase in a literal sense. The icon shows in an impressive way the Orthodox iconography of the Holy Trinity, and the power of God. The Trinity is seated upon a throne of Cherubins, whose red faces are visible on the background. The globe, symbol of God’s power upon the world and the universe, is surmounted by a cross, like the small globes visible in the hands of the earthly medieval emperors. The blessing gesture of the left hand of the Father represents a sort of Divine Investiture of the Son (three raised fingers representing the Divine Nature of Christ, two lowered fingers representing the Human Nature of the Incarnation). The gold and brocade mantles and tunics are an echo of the oriental silk used in the Levant and Ottoman Empire during that period. The timber to the reverse shows some old insect flight holes and we are advised that this piece has been recently treated with Permthrin, as a precaution. Fair condition.

WITWATERSRAND GOLDFIELDS : "An Atlas of the Witwatersrand Goldfields in the South African Republic, compiled under the direction of C. S. Goldman ... and Baron A. Von Maltzan ..."Single page map, 40 of 42 full and double coloured plans of various estates, etc. It lacks two plans six and nine. The title-page, contents and index pages all heavily creased and poorly repaired ( the book has obviously had some extensive use) the actual maps apart from a few short tears are mainly in good order. Half morocco worn large title label on upper cover. Atlas : elephant folio, 770 x 590 mm. Published by Edward Stanford in London, 1899. * A used copy of a rare book, we have only found records of two being sold in the past 50 years. The Witwatersrand region, which forms a natural watershed between the Vaal and Olifants rivers is 40 km wide and extends for more than 100km. The thin bands of gold known as "reefs" are mined at depths of up to 3,050 meters. Founded as a mining settlement in 1886, Johannesburg already appears as a sizeable mining town 14 years later when this book was published, despite the Boer War (1899-1902) being in full swing. Colonized by the Boers, the Transvaal become independent in 1881. About this time gold was discovered. Interestingly this atlas was published with it's many lithographed maps during the first year of the war.Sold with the Atlas are eight of the original manuscript underground mine shaft plans of the " Great Hole of Kimberley." Which is the site of the World's greatest gold rush, the Kimberly Mine dates back to 1871.The plans drawn to scale are large for instance one titled 'A K 17' is folded and hand coloured mounted on linen dissecting into seventeen sections, it extends to 1338 mm. Indicating the progression of the height and length of the shaft. These historical precision documents provide a unique record
