Die Darstellung von Margarete Kleinschmidt, der Frau des Künstlers, gehört zu den immer wiederkehrenden Motiven im Bereich seiner Figurenbilder. Sind die früheren Bildnisse noch dem konservativen Einfluss akademischer Tradition verhaftet, so zeigt er seine Familie in den Jahren ab 1920 vermehrt im privaten, wenig repräsentativen Umfeld. Zur Darstellung der Personen in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung ermunterte ihn sein Freund und Künstlerkollege Lovis Corinth. Dabei ist es Kleinschmidts Anliegen, vor allem in den Werken die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstehen, die Frau im Allgemeinen in ihren verschiedenen Erscheinungen unter dem Einfluss ihrer Umwelt zu zeigen. Meist geschieht die Auseinandersetzung mit Bewegung, Umgebung und Stimmung unter Zuhilfenahme von Attributen, wie wir es auch von Max Beckmann aus dieser Zeit kennen. Wenn in den bevorzugten Boudoir- und Caféhausszenen meist eine gewisse Intimität und Unmittelbarkeit herrscht, so ist die Darstellung von Frau K. hier etwas abgemildert. Margarete Kleinschmidt wird hier im Ausgehkostüm, mit weißen Handschuhen und Federhut besonders festlich dargestellt. Durch die verzerrte Sicht im Spiegel erreicht der Maler eine Verfremdung im Sinne des Expressionismus. In der Darstellung des Maiglöckchenstraußes findet sich auch seine Vorliebe, Stillleben in figürliche Darstellungen zu inkludieren. Die Überbetonung des Körperlichen, quellende, pralle Körper und das "Ranholen" des Bildmotives durch einen engen Bildausschnitt sind charakteristisch für Kleinschmidts Figurenbilder.Neues Werkverzeichnis:VAN HAM Art Publications hat begonnen, auf der Grundlage der Dissertation »Paul Kleinschmidt 1883-1949", 1977, von Dr. Barbara Lipps-Kant ein neues Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde und Arbeiten auf Papier zu erstellen. Provenienz:- Nachlass des Künstlers- Privatsammlung SchweizDer Maler Hans Kraft und seine Frau, die Geigerin Lotte Kraft-Rohner, besuchten Kirchner erstmals 1928. Damals entstand ein kraftvoller Holzschnitt des Paares (Vgl. Zusatzabbildung). Sie blieben mit Kirchner verbunden. Am 17. Juni 1938 spielte die "Violinistin" bei seiner Beerdigung: Ein letzter Freundschaftsdienst. Wie intensiv die Musikerin ihr Instrument beherrschte, zeigt die vorliegende Zeichnung: Die Decke des Klangkörpers und die Konturen des Gesichts der Geigerin verschmelzen zu einer Linie: Hier die Rundung des Instruments - dort die des Kinns, des Mundes, der Nase und der Stirn: Ausdruck einer schöpferischen Einheit von Violine und Violinistin.
