"Several copies of a two-volume issue of Pickwick exist. Circumstances regarding this issue are obscure, but Eckel and others, including Carr, McCutcheon, and Sawyer, have suggested that it preceded the one-volume issue, was abandoned before many copies were distributed, and did not appear in publisher's cloth. Titlepages for this two-volume issue were printed with the volume number (VOLUME I., II.) between PHIZ and the imprint" (Smith). "After the completion of this [monthly parts] issue a volume edition was published at the price of one guinea. Within the past ten years two copies in two volumes have appeared with an added title page for the volumes. As this was clearly an experiment it may be that only a few copies were so made up, and, being displeasing, were rejected" (Eckel).
