HMS Kelvin was a K-class destroyer built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Govan, Scotland and launched in 1939. Kelvin fought in several theatres during the Second World War. During Operation Overlord she was assigned to Task Force D, and was tasked at dawn on 6 June 1944 to bombard the German positions in the area of Sword Beach. Looseness to sprung baton links, the clasp is functioning. General surface wear, scuffs and chips/nicks throughout, with patchy thinning to the edges of the settings. The winder is base metal and possibly replaced, but functioning. The movement runs when wound but is untested for working order, which cannot be guaranteed. One diamond to the case is missing, remaining diamonds are bright and lively, some stones with chips/fractures. Estimated VS2 to P2 clarity and H to K colour, assessed mounted. Diamonds graduate from approximately 0.01ct to 0.10ct each in size. Metal standard is untested. Total length 17cm. Gross weight approximately 21.5gm (including dial/movement).

Some of the fractures are surface-reaching and the sapphire has surface wear, chips and scuffs. Sapphire dimensions approximately 8.6mm length x 6.5mm width x 4.3mm depth. Diamonds are bright and lively with slightly variable clarity, some stones with chips/fractures, estimated SI1 to P2 clarity and I to L colour, assessed mounted. There are traces of a yellowish residue to the setting and one of the shoulder set diamonds is a later replacement. The settings are worn, with areas of thinning, and the central collet has chips and nicks. The shank has worn a little thin. Length of cluster setting 1.45cm. Metal standard is untested. The outline is off-round but faceting is fairly symmetrical. Estimated SI1 to SI2 clarity, assessed mounted. Principal diamond dimensions approximately 8.9mm to 9.2mm diameter x 4.75mm depth. The bordering old-cut diamonds are bright and lively with slightly variable clarity, some stones with chips, nicks and surface-reaching fractures. These diamonds have estimated H to K colour and VS1 to P2 clarity, assessed mounted (those with chips/fractures have P2 clarity) and graduate from approximately 0.23ct to 0.01ct in size. Lasque-cut diamonds have a typically greyish, fractured appearance.It is possible that the outer crescent-shaped border has been later added to the central cluster setting but both appear to be of a similar age, which is likely to be late 19th/early 20th century. The settings are probably a gold/silver combination, but are untested as such, and have considerable dark tarnishing/fire staining. The mount has surface wear throughout, with slight thinning to the edges of some settings. Width of mount 2.65cm. The detachable brooch fitting has a fairly modern visor clasp that functions and is accompanied by a screwdriver. Gross weight of pendant/brooch (including fittings) approximately 8.6gm.
