GEORGE HENRY WALTON (1867–1933) FOR MISS CRANSTON'S BUCHANAN STREET TEAROOMS, GLASGOW RARE OCCASIONAL TABLE, CIRCA 1896 dark stained beech, with polychrome painted decoration 91cm wide, 74cm high, 64cm deep Literature: Moon K. George Walton, White Cockade 1993, p.53, pl. 62 where a period photograph shows similar tables in situ.Note: This table was made for Miss Cranston's new tearoom in Buchanan Street in Glasgow in 1896. Contemporary photographs show this table was situated in the Dining Room where all the furniture and wall treatments were by George Walton whereas the lighting was by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This table would have been set for two people and covered with a white tablecloth whilst in use. Walton also designed a tall side chair, a low side chair and an armchair for these rooms, each dark stained with hand-painted floral sprigs following the colour scheme of the walls which were designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The curved form of the furniture continues the 'Glasgow Style' Art Nouveau aesthetic, whilst the Regency inspiration which the design subverts is still evident.

He thought that fireplaces should offer restfulness through quiet design and railed against the “multitudinous mixture of materials, colours and textures…attracting the most attention, and disturbing the peaceful reflections of the house-holder”.
