ANCIENT COINS, Greek, Attica, Athens, Tetradrachm, New Style, 188-186 BC, helmeted head of Athena Parthenos right, rev T, owl on amphora at left, magistrates names, -S-O, F/O and GI, magistrates on 88-87 BC, symbol, Pegasus drinking left at right, K on amphora, S in exergue, 16.20g, 12h (SNG Cop 197, 198 var; Svoronos pl.68, 11). Nearly very fine.
FOREIGN COINS, Crusader States, Antioch, Raymond Roupen (1216-1219), Helmet Denier, class L/J mule, RUPINVS, helmeted bust left, crescent in left field and star in right field, rev AITIOCIIIA, cross with crescent in second quarter, 0.82g (see K Shea, NC 2005, pp.279-284). Edge split, otherwise about very fine and very rare. It is not known for certain whether class J preceded class K or vice versa, and this mule appears to support the hypothesis that class K in fact preceded class J. The style of the lettering on the obverse is also noticeably different from other coins of Raymond Roupen, suggesting that the obverse die was used very early in his coinage.
