[Notes of Fleet Captain Rikord concerning his sailing to Japan's shores in 1812 and 1813, and about his relations with the Japanese.] St. Petersburg: at the Naval Press, 1816. 4° (235 x 184mm). Engraved portrait of Takadaya-Kahei, and 4 engraved folding plans after Rikord. (Damptain in the bottom margin of some leaves, light scattered spotting.) FIRST EDITION OF RIKORD'S EXPEDITION TO RESCUE GOLOVNIN. It constitutes an important and early first-hand account of contact between Japan and Russia. Rikord sailed to Japan on the Russian sloop-of-war Diana, taking on board a number of Japanese seamen shipwrecked off the coast of Kamchatka, and capturing Takadaya-Kahei and several crew from a large junk. He landed at Kunashie where he negotiated the eventual release of Golovnin, averting war with Japan. Golovnin later wrote a popular account of the experiences; both accounts were translated for an English edition in 1818. AFTER THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM PITT THE YOUNGER (1759-1806) half length, feigned oval, 35 x 27cm ++A 19th c copy of Gainsborough`s portrait of Pitt the younger. Lined in the later 19th or early 20th c and with small postage sized patch on the reverse to repair a small T shaped tear just to the left of the sitter`s head. On the stretcher a stencilled No 458 followed by a letter, possibly K. The medium with some light overall craqueleur, in good quality 19thc giltwood and composition rococo frame.

The rubies are well matched, they are pinkish in tone, the central ruby has a internal fracture running across the stone, one of the smaller rubies is abraded to the facet edges. Ring size K. The buckle ring is slightly misshapen into an oval shape, the diamonds are bright and lively, there is a join line becoming visible to the back of the ring shank. Condition: Overall condition of the rings is good, with wear and surface scratches commensurate to the age of the rings, hallmarks to both are clear and legible. Both would benefit from a clean. The rubies in the rectangular shaped cluster ring are slightly unevenly set and have very minor abrasions to some of the facet edges. The diamonds seem quite well matched and would brighten with a clean. Ring size K 1/2. The rubies in the five stone ring show minor abrasion to the table facet edges. Condition: Overall good condition, with minor scratches and very small shallow dints to the metal. The aquamarine is loose in its setting, this will need attention. The aquamarine has some nibbles to the facet edges, it has a strong and evenly dispersed body colour and is very clean. The diamonds are bright, lively and fairly clean. Ring size K.
