Charles Dickens interest. A George IV mahogany and brass mounted correspondence box, the hinged lid centred a later oval plaque inscribed `Gerald. 13. Oct. 1918. Belonged to Auntie`, to a vacant interior previously with a tray, the underside of the lid with a hinged pull-down compartment, with gothic strapwork mounts and brass side carrying handles, with key and letter from Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens, 6.5in (16.3cm) h, 15.5in (39.4cm) w, 10in (25cm) d. Provenance: This box is being sold with a handwritten letter from its previous owner Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens K. C. V. O., Etc. formerly of 3 Macartney House, Greenwich Park, London S.E. 10 and the grandson of Charles Dickens. The letter states `The box with the following inscription on it `Gerald 13th October 1918 Belonged to Auntie, Auntie was Georgina Hogarth, Charles Dickens` Sister-in-law (and my great aunt) who until the latter`s death in 1870 lived at Gads Hill Place. G. C. Dickens, 25th April 1958`. Georgina Hogarth joined Dickens` household in 1842 aged 15 and stayed until his death in 1870. In 1858 she sided with Dickens in his quarrel with her sister Catherine, Dickens` wife. This resulted in Catherine moving out with her eldest son while Georgina remained in the household to care for the remaining children. According to Charles Dickens` will Georgina `Auntie` inherited: `£8,000 free of legacy and duty, all my personal jewellery and all the familiar and personal items from my writing table and room`. The above box could well have belonged to Charles Dickens, it certainly is a masculine piece and on his death passed to Georgina Hogarth and thence to his grandson Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens on his 39th birthday.
