Digby, Peter K A Pyramids and Poppies. The 1st SA Infantry Brigade in Libya, France and Flanders 1915-1919 8vo; original pale grey boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; pp. xiv + 444, incl. index; liberally illustrated with maps, photographs and contemporary artwork. Spine a little sunned; some spotting to top edge. Near fine condition. `Pyramids and Poppies is the very personal story of the 1st South African Brigade on the Western Front during World War I. On this `front of all fronts`, as it was called by the millions of men who lived and died in the mud of trench warfare, South Africans were present. Nearly four and a half thousand men of the South African Brigade were never to return from that front alone. John Buchan rated the 1st SA Brigade `to have had no superior and not many equals`. Yet, since Buchan wrote The South African Forces in France in 1920, no book has been written that covers the whole spectrum of the 1st SA Brigade in World War I. That account has now been updated and expanded with a wealth of material. Delville Wood is here, so is Butte de Warlencourt, Arras, Ypres, Marrières Wood, Messines; the parched desert of Africa and the stinking mud of Flanders. Through it all bursts the bravery and compassion of men who offered themselves in innocence, and learned the cruel indifference of war waged by armchair generals.` Publisher Place: Johannesburg Publisher: Ashanti Publishing Publication Date: 1993 Reserve: $30 Click here to view further details and to bid
Dickson, W. K.-L. The Biograph in Battle. Its Story in the South African War 8vo; original pictorial green cloth; tinted top edge; pp. xix + (i) + 296 + adverts.; frontis. portrait; liberally illustrated, from photographs and sketches by the author, including a folding panorama and several plates. Spine slightly darkened and extremities a little rubbed; new endpapers; occasional trace of fingering; short, closed tears to fore-edge of two leaves. Very good condition. (Hackett, pp. 101, 142; Mendelssohn I, p. 469) `Observations of a film pioneer in South Africa. Dickson joined General Buller`s army in Natal and witnessed events at Colenso, Spion Kop and the entry of Ladysmith. He later joined Lord Roberts force in the western advance filming the annexation ceremony at Bloemfontein and the hoisting of the British flag at Pretoria.` - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 101. `Mr. Dickson was the first man to reproduce actual battles by the biograph in the South African War. He obtained some unique privileges and permits from the military authorities, `so that he saw and heard things which probably came within the ken of no other civilian ... he was able to get photographs of things which never before came into the eye of the camera.`` - Mendelssohn. Fry, C Hilary, Stuart Keith and Emil K Urban (series editors) Birds of Africa (Seven volumes, 1982-2004) One of the finest series of bird books to have been published in recent times, this 7-vol set took a quarter of a century to plan and produce, with many of the world`s leading authorities working under the three series editors. The bird artist responsible for most of the 232 full-page colour plates was Martin Woodcock, with credit for most of the line illustrations in the text going to Ian Wallis. Although the set runs to a total of 4700 pp, good indexing and cross-referencing make it easy to use. This series of first editions is in fine overall condition, with no ownership names or other markings. Departures from what would otherwise be `as new` condition are light thumbing, indicating how little this set (from the estate of one of Johannesburg`s leading bird book collectors) was used; as well as the minor blemishes noted in the following summary of the volumes - bound in matching brown cloth, gilt to the front and spine, and with laminated dustjackets. Vol I. xiii + 521 pp. Small chip to the dustjacket at the rear top fold. Vol II. xvi + 552 pp. Headband soft. Vol III. xvi + 611 pp. Small black horizontal stain at upper middle of front dustjacket. Vol IV. xv + 609 pp. Small crease to the top front of dustjacket. Vol V. xix + 669 pp. The last 18 leaves, including some blanks, are lightly rippled at the middle of the outer edge, with no effect on the text. Vol VI. xvii + 724 pp. Headband soft; 3 cm stain at upper left of front of dustjacket. Vol VII. xxi + 666 pp. Front top of dustjacket and 6 cm of front upper board and top of spine lightly rubbed. Condition: Fine Publisher Place: London; London Publisher: Academic Press (first 6 volumes); Christopher Helm (last volume) Publication Date: 1984-2004 Size: 315 x 215; shelf space 35 cm; weight 22 kg Reserve: $350 Click here to view further details and to bid

Literature: K. Eisele, Jan Wijnants (1631/2-1684) [Catalogue Raisonné], Stuttgart 2000, p.143, no.112. C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch Painters of the Seventeenth Century, Vol. VIII, page 484, no.229, where it is suggested it is the Castle of Mooiland near Cleves. Jan Jansz Wijnants was born in Haarlem, the son of a Catholic art dealer also called Jan Wijnants. He and his stepbrother van Heemskerck were among the foremost painters in the 'Golden Age' of Dutch painting, among the students in his studio was Adrien van de Velde. He is primarily known for his Italianate landscapes and later his work, with his Haarlem contemporaries Hobbema and van Ruisdael, was an influence on Thomas Gainsborough, particularly his early Suffolk works. Cleves (Kleve in German, Clèves in French and Kleef in Dutch) is a town in north-west Germany close to the Dutch border. For much of the first half of the seventeenth century during the Thirty Years War, it was in Dutch control and much of the region remained that way until the Franco-Dutch war in 1672. It was then incorporated into the region of Brandenburg-Prussia, but was occupied again in the 18th century, this time by the French during the Seven Years War. In 1675 Moyland Castle was owned by Alexander Freiherr von Spaen (14 January 1619 - 23 October 1692) who was a Generalfeldmarschall of Brandenburg-Prussia. He had the castle fortifications largely rebuilt in 1662 and very likely commissioned the painting. CONDITION REPORT: Relined. Round stamp to back of canvas. Crazing and craquelure throughout picture. Small areas of overpainting, majority in foreground around figures and trees. Including to path and to right of lady with dog. Two areas in front and above chateau over painted. Have record of surface cleaning, regeneration of original varnish, minor retouchings and revarnishing in 1983 by Sarah Witherow, through Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox.
Two oil paintings on canvas by J K Whitton, both showing Gloucestershire landscapes with distant hills and one including a group of children climbing the hill, both signed with initials bottom right and both with artist`s cards verso, one inscribed "Pincott Farm and view of Churchdown Hill", 30 x 40 cm the other inscribed "View of Robins Wood and May Hills with children", 35 x 30 cm, both in gilt frames
