BRUNEL ISAMBARD KINGDOM: (1806-1859) British Engineer. A.L.S., I K Brunel, one page, 8vo, Duke Street, Westminster, 12th May 1837, to C. W. Stevens, on the printed stationery of the Great Western Railway. Brunel confirms to his correspondent that the 'statement of Mr. White requesting an arrangement with me as to Mr. Cholmeley's land is quite correct'. With integral address leaf in Brunel's hand and bearing a few small remnants of the original red wax seal and several postal cancellations. Some light creasing and minor age wear, about VG £600-800 Brunel's letter is written during the time he was engineering the Great Western Railway which linked London with the southwest and west of England, the West Midlands and most of Wales. Labelled by some as 'God's Wonderful Railway', it's first trains ran on 4th June 1838, just over a year after the present letter was written.

BRUNEL ISAMBARD KINGDOM: (1806-1859) British Engineer. A rare vintage signed carte-de-visite photograph by Brunel, the original image seemingly removed and subsequently neatly and professionally replaced with a vintage albumen image of the famous portrait of Brunel by Robert Howlett depicting the engineer standing in a full length pose in front of the giant launching chains on the 'checking drum' braking mechanism at John Scott Russell's Millwall shipyard in 1857. Signed ('I K Brunel') by Brunel in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower photographer's mount, the very upper edge of his signature slightly obscured as a result of the image being laid down above the signature. With the imprint of the London Stereoscopic Company to the verso. Some extremely minor, light age wear and a couple of light scuffs to the image. About VG £2000-3000 The iconic image of Brunel was captured by Robert Howlett as part of his commission for the Illustrated Times to document the construction of the world's largest steamship, the SS Great Eastern which had been designed by Brunel. The present image was taken in November 1857 to celebrate the launch of the steamship and has been described as 'one of the first examples of environmental portraiture'. Robert Howlett (1831-1858) British Photographer, a pioneer in the field who, upon his untimely death at the age of 27, was described by the Illustrated Times as 'one of the most skilful photographers of the day'. Despite the present example not being a signed photograph of Brunel in it's true, original state, it nevertheless remains an extremely rare example of a signed portrait of the engineer that would, in our opinion, certainly satisfy the desires of most collectors looking to acquire a signed photograph of Brunel.

PARK KEITH: (1892-1975) New Zealand Air Chief Marshal of World War II, played a significant role during the Battle of Britain. D.S., K R Park, one page, folio, France, 29th June 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a combat report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to the destruction of an enemy aircraft by Captain J. E. Drummond of 48 Squadron, piloting a Bristol Fighter C.926. Drummond's narrative states, in part, 'While on O.P. over HANGEST, in conjunction with another flight of the Squadron, and with a formation of S.E.5's of 41 Squadron, I observed a red light fired by the S.E.5's, which were the lowest of the three formations, while my flight was the highest. I took my flight down, and as we swerved outwards to avoid our other flight, I came across a stray E[nemy] A[ircraft] which was going East at a great pace. As we passed down my Observer fired 100 rounds into the E.A. at 200 yards range; I then did a climbing turn and dived on the E.A. firing about 100 rounds…..The E.A. went at once into a vertical dive. I followed it down and when it flattened out, I put another 100 rounds into it…..Smoke started streaming from the E.A. which went over on its back and then fell into a slow, wide spin, smoke still streaming from it. When I saw it next it was diving vertically again…..We circled round the crash and saw it lying there, still smoking'. Park has signed his name at the foot in his capacity as a Major Commanding 48 Squadron, Royal Air Force, and in approval of Drummond's account. Several file holes to the left edge and corner, none of which affect the text or signature, and with a few pencil annotations. About VG £300-400

Hand-numbered edition 128/300 of this exceptionally rare and illustrious publication, complete with all printed plates and text.LOT NOTESDas Werk, Klimt's only monograph published in his lifetime, was produced in close collaboration his friend, the Viennese publisher Hugo Heller. Klimt supervised its production from 1908-1918, shortly before his death. Each image is rendered in collotype (heliogravure) and bears its distinctive signet in the lower margin. These gold signets were original designs, which Klimt specifically developed between 1908 and 1914 in order to designate and symbolize each image in this portfolio. The total edition of 300 originally included: I-XXXV including an original drawing by Klimt, XXXVI-LXX with a facsimile signature on the title page, and this edition of 230. However, many were lost or misplaced due to Heller's bankruptcy, subsequent move, and Klimt's death soon after the publication, making existing copies more rare. Amongst the owners of the portfolio were the Emperor Franz Joseph, the first to buy a copy, and the noted American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
