A rare set of six Nymphenburg topographical plates from an armorial service presented to the Ottoman Turkish Court, dated 1847Each superbly painted with a topographical view depicting Bavarian views, titled, signed and dated 1847 in black on the reverse, within a burnished gilt band, the rims reserved with a band of gilt foliage and scrollwork against the burgundy red ground, a gilt-edged circular reserve at the top and bottom painted with the crescent and star, and the royal arms of Bavaria, respectively, inscribed:Landshut/ gemalt von/ v. The precise origins of this topographical service, of which only nine other plates are recorded, remain to be discovered, though it seems almost certain to have been a gift from the Bavarian court to the Ottoman Turkish Sultan or one of his representatives. The service was likely presented in an attempt to repair a diplomatic dispute between Greece - whose monarch since independence was King Otto, the second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria - and the Turkish Ottoman Empire. The dispute in early 1847 brought the two countries to the brink of conflict, which also threatened to draw in the European powers. The Bavarian government advised Greece to make concessions, which it did following the intervention of Austria in December 1847. The gift of these plates seems likely to have been an attempt by the Bavarian government to repair relations with the Ottoman Turks; see K. Hantschmann, Nymphenburger Porzellan 1797 bis 1857 (1996), cat. no. 279, for a discussion of the service and a list of the other nine plates, eight of which are in Bavarian museums. See also pp. 446, 448 and 454 for details of the painters, Ferdinand Le Feubure, Karl von Marx and Gottlieb Schramm. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Frühe Wiener Porzellanservice, 9 December 1994-5 March 1995Two similarly-decorated Du Paquier hunting services - each including two different border patterns - are recorded: the first was originally owned by the Imperial family and was presented by the Empress Maria Theresia to the Benedictine abbey of Sankt Blasien in 1773; the second belonged to the Princes of Liechtenstein. The Sankt Blasien service was moved in the Napoleonic period to another Benedictine abbey in Austria, from where the surviving 54 pieces were sold to the Staatliche Kunstgewerbemuseum (now Museum für angewandte Kunst) in Vienna in 1925 (M. Chilton/C. Lehner-Jobst, Fired by Passion (2009), cat. no. 227).According to a 1748 inventory of the silver chamber of the Liechtenstein Schloss Feldsberg in southern Moravia, the 'black hunting service' comprised 126 pieces: 80 plates, 8 round and 6 oval tureens, 4 sauce boats, 13 small plates, and 7 eight-cornered and 8 oval dishes in two to three sizes. Of these, 24 pieces have survived in the possession of the Prince of Liechtenstein (Chilton/Lehner-Jobst, cat. no. 228). The Liechtenstein archives reveal that less than a tenth of the wares purchased by the Princes from the Du Paquier manufactory has survived in the family's possession (K. Hantschmann, The Art of Dining, in Chilton/Lehner-Jobst, vol. 2, p. 835).See also footnote to lot 6.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A very rare Meissen Hausmaler beaker and saucer, circa 1728-30Painted by Ignaz Bottengruber, Breslau, the beaker depicting Mars in full armour holding a sword and shield, attended by a horse, enclosed by elaborate gilt foliate scrollwork embellished with military trophies, the reverse painted en grisaille with a battle scene, the saucer similarly decorated with Minerva enclosed by gilt scrollwork embellished with a Medusa head, various trophies, owls and a monkey, above another small monochrome scene, the beaker: 7.6cm high; the saucer: 12.5cm diam. Cassidy-Geiger, The Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain 1710-50 (2008), no. 323. The author notes (p. 637) that Bottengruber likely was influenced by prints after artists at the French court, such as Berain, Marot and Claude Audran, for which see D.O. Kisluk-Grosheide, 'Cutting up Berchems, Watteaus and Audrans': a Lacca Povera Secretary at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Metropolitan Museum Journal 31 (1996), figs. 28-33. A Meissen figure of St. John Nepomuk, circa 1731Modelled by Johann Gottlieb Kirchner, in two parts, the group kneeling on a cloud borne by four angels, on it five gilt relief stars (symbolising the word 'tacui' [I am silent]), the Saint wearing an ermine cloak trimmed in gold, the angels and saint coloured in flesh tones, their wings picked out in gilding, fitted on an ormolu metal base fitting onto the elaborate scrollwork base surmounted by another angel holding a biretta, the scrollwork elaborately detailed in relief, the strapwork picked out in gilding, the trefoil base with gilt scrollwork and stylised floral patterns in gold, 54 cm high, crossed swords mark to the base (some restoration) (2)Footnotes:The martyr St. John Nepomuk, who was canonised in 1729, was drowned in the Vltava River in Prague in 1393 by order of the king of the Romans and of Bohemia. He was patron saint of Bohemia and greatly venerated in the Hapsburg lands and southern Germany. The Crown Princess of Saxony, the Habsburg princess Maria Josepha was particularly devoted to the Saint and the north-east chapel in the Hofkirche was later dedicated to him. Because of the manner of his death, he is regarded as the protector from floods and drowning, and bridges in Central Europe often bear his statue.Ernst Zimmermann linked this model in 1929 to an archive reference that refers to Kirchner working on a figure of Nepomuk in Autumn 1731 'so nebst Postament 1 elle lang ist [along with the pedestal 1 elle long]. In October 1731, drawings for 'Altären' [altars] had been sent by Augustus the Strong to the Meissen manufactory as a context for Kirchner's model. Due to technical difficulties, he made at least five models, of which two examples of the figure were successfully fired in November 1731 and three were ready for firing in December (J.L. Sponsel, Kabinettstücke (1900), p. 52). Among the deliveries to the Dresden depot for Augustus III on 7 March 1733, there is: '1 Johannes nepomucenus-Figur mit beschlaganem Postamente und 1 Crucifix dabey' [1 figure of St. John Nepomuk with ornamental pedestal and 1 Crucifix] (quaoted by K. Berling, Festive Publication (1911), p. 13; E. Zimmermann, E. Kirchner (1929), pp. 14-15, 30). In February 1744, J.J. Kaendler copied Kirchner's figure for his group of Nepomuk on the bridge (R. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan (1966), no. 914).Other examples of the Kirchner figure of St. John Nepumuk with the pedestal are in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Frankfurt; the Museum of Decorative Arts (UPM) in Prague (published by U. Pietsch/C. Banz (eds.), Triumph der blauen Schwerter (2000), no. 385); the Gardiner Museum, Toronto (unpublished loan); and another was sold at Galerie Koller, Zürich, 28 March 2011, lot 1591. Examples of the figure without the pedestal are in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin (S. Bursche, Meissen (1980), no. 298; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (inv. no. C.37-1961); and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (A.L. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum (2000), no. 311).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

When it was sold in 1797 it was described as including two waste bowls, two sugar boxes and eighteen pairs of teabowls, but no coffee pot. The waste bowl, two beakers and saucers and two teabowls and saucers were acquired by Rosenborg Castle in 1986. A teabowl and saucer from the service was in the Arnhold Collection, New York (M. Cassidy-Geiger, The Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain (2008), no. 100); another is in the Carabelli Collection (U. Pietsch, Frühes Meißener Porzellan Sammlung Carabelli (2000), no. 57); and others were sold in these Rooms, from the Marouf Collection on 2 December 2015. lot 41, on 5 July 2018, lot 40, and on 22 July 2020, lot 45 (formerly in the Hoffmeister Collection, sold in these Rooms, 26 May 2010, lot 70). Two Meissen armorial double-handled beakers and saucers from the service for Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, circa 1734Each finely painted with the arms of Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden on an elaborate gilt scrollwork pedestal, the beakers with Kauffahrtei and harbour scenes within gilt shaped quatrelobe scrollwork cartouches filled with Böttger lustre and edged with iron-red and purple scrolls, the handles half gilt, the saucers with sprigs of indianische Blumen on the reverse, gilt foliate scrollwork borders to the rims, the beakers: 7cm high; the saucers: 13cm diam., crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue, impressed Dreher's marks : for Johann Martin Kittel to saucers (4)Footnotes:Provenance:Ordered by Augustus the Strong, probably in late 1732;Given by Augustus III of Poland and Saxony to Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden in May 1734;Transferred to the Royal Wardrobe after Queen Ulrika Eleonora's death in 1741;Anon. sale, Auktionverket Stockholm, 1 December 1992, lots 5247 and 5248Literature:U. The gift, which consisted of several services and sets of decorative objects, is mostly still preserved in Swedish collections (see Ljungström, pp.257-273). Queen Ulrika Eleonora (1688-1741), the daughter of Charles XI, reigned in her own right for only a short time, from the death of her brother in November 1718 until February 1720, when she abdicated in favour of her husband, Friedrich, Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel (Frederik I of Sweden). The political and diplomatic purpose of Augustus III's gifts to Queen Ulrika Eleonora and her husband, lay in his plans to succeed his father as King of Poland, although in a letter to the queen he himself claimed that the initiative for the gift was originally his father's (see Ljungström for a comprehensive discussion). The Meissen manufactory archives include a list dated 1st February 1733 of finished and unfinished porcelain for the gift to Sweden ('Was vor Ihro Königl. Majestät in Schweden an Porcellain Geschirren bereits verferttiget und noch zu verferttigen ist..'), which indicates that the present tea and chocolate service for the Queen had already been finished: '2 Thee- und Chocolade-Servise, als: 1 fein emaillirtes mit Seefahrten, Landschaften und Wappen (ist verferttiget und geliefert)..' (2 tea and chocolate services, as: 1 finely enamelled with sea journeys, landscapes and arms (is completed and delivered). An earlier report of August 1732 indicates that one tea service (as well as a small table service and two chimney garnitures) had already been completed (quoted by G. Reinheckel, Prachtvolle Service aus Meissner Porzellan (1989), p. 196, no. 66).An undated document quoted by Rainer Rückert suggests that the gift to Sweden was ordered by Augustus the Strong personally during a visit to Meissen before mid January 1733 (R. Rückert, R. Rückert, Alchemistische Symbolzeichen..., in Keramos 151 (1996), p. 86).The teapot, coffee pot, sugar bowl and cover, tea caddy and six teabowls and saucers, were given to Skokloster Castle in 1840 by Count Magnus Stenbock. They were probably inherited by his mother, Countess Lolotte Stenbock, from the estate of Princess Sofia Albertina of Sweden (1753-1829), whose Lady-in-Waiting she was (Ljungström 2007, loc. cit.). Two further beakers and saucers were sold in these rooms from the Hoffmeister Collection, 25 Nov 2009, lot 80, and 24 Nov 2010, lot 65. A waste bowl from the service was also in the Hoffmeister Collection and sold in these rooms, 26 May 2010, lot 69.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A rare Meissen armorial plate from the 'Coronation Service', circa 1733-34The centre painted with the quartered Arms of Saxony and Poland within a crowned escutcheon surrounded by scattered flowers and banded hedges in Kakiemon style, the rim with a broad band of elaborate gilt scrollwork, 24cm diam., crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, incised Dreher's mark for Johann Christoph Pietzsch, incised Japanese Palace inventory number N=147-/ W (very minor wear)Footnotes:Provenance:The Royal collections of Saxony, Japanese Palace, Dresden (from 1734);Private Collection, Germany (by 1997)Literature:U. The prominence of the Polish arms perhaps suggests the latter, though the name 'Coronation service' is a 19th-century title. The service was delivered to the Japanese Palace in Dresden in 1734, when, according to a delivery specification (published by C. Boltz, Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769, in Keramos 153 (July 1996), p. 91), it comprised 77 parts in total, including 37 plates, and only six such small lobed dishes. The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace (Boltz, ibid., p. 76), lists the service under number 147: 'Ein Tafel-Service, mit dem Königl. Pohlnis, und ChurFürstl. Sächsi. Wappen, fein mit Golde und Zierrathen, aufm Boden mit gebundenen Korn-Aehren, und kleinen Blümgen, der Rand sehr reich mit vergoldeten Zierrathen eingefaßt' [a table service with the Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon arms, fine with gold and decorations, with bundles of corn sheaves and small flowers on the surface, the rim with very rich gold decorations]. The inventory lists the same pieces as the 1734 delivery specification, except for three missing tureens and a broken plate. According to the catalogue of the Wark Collection catalogue (1984, no. 516), part of the service was transferred to the Hofconditorei (court pantry) in 1792, and was used at the Dresden Residence for special court functions. In addition to the examples listed by Dieter Hoffmeister (Meissen Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts Sammlung Hoffmeister, vol. II (1999), nos. 343-344) other plates from the service are in the Seattle Art Museum (inv. no. 69.201, gift of Martha and Henry Isaacson); in the Ludwig Collection, Bamberg (R. Hanemann (pub.), Goldchinesen und Indianischen Blumen (2010), no. 69); and in the Arnhold Collection, New York (M. Cassidy-Geiger, The Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain 1710-50 (2008), no. 186). Two plates were sold in these Rooms from the Hoffmeister Collection, 25 November 2009, lot 74, and 26 May 2010, lot 65, and a circular dish was sold in these Rooms from a Private European Collection, 6 Dec 2018, lot 260.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
