David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "John Pierpont Morgan" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Shapers of America Collection produced throughout 1986 and 1987. The son of a British financier who headed the Morgan Bank in London, young John Pierpont Morgan entered the financial arena almost as a matter of course, early demonstrating a genius for what was the "family business." Barely 30 years old, he successfully fought off the attempt of two "Robber Barons" -- Jim Fisk and Daniel Drew -- to take over the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad which he served as agent. Affiliating with his father's banking house soon after, he became the most powerful American banker since Stephen Girard. By 1880 he had won a commanding position through consolidation of the railroads and the formation of giant "trusts." A pioneer in replacing bonds with stocks -- thus transferring the risks from the corporation to the investors -- his policy was to install members of his own bank on the boards of other corporations. Ultimately, he refused to deal with, or invest in, corporations on any other terms. Morgan's greatest financial coup was the organization of the U.S. Steel Corporation in 1901. By that time his dominant position in scores of industries caused him to exert a powerful influence on the national economy. Thus Morgan became a symbol of the "Money Trust." J.P. Morgan donated some of his money to public and quasi-public purposes. He built an imposing collection of paintings, furniture, sculpture, and enamels and willed them to the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, while the Morgan Library in New York stands as a monument to his philanthropy. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "U.S. House of Representatives" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c U.S. House of Representatives stamp issued April 4, 1989. The idea for the House of Representatives, as with its counterpart, the Senate, was born in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention. After ratification of the Constitution in 1789, the House began work with sixty-five members. The stamp featured on this First Day Cover commemorates the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the House, which by 1913 had grown to four hundred thirty-five members. Traditionally, the House has remained at that number, with the exception of a temporary expansion in 1959. At that time, Hawaii and Alaska became states, and two extra members were temporarily added to represent them in the House. Representatives are apportioned to states on the basis of population, and are reapportioned after each census to maintain a fair distribution. A Representative must be at least twenty-five years old, have been a citizen of the United States for seven years, and be a resident of the state that he or she is representing. Representatives conduct business in committees and subcommittees. The three most important committees are Ways and Means, Appropriations, and Rules, handling tax measures, funding for government agencies and the flow of business on the House floor, respectively. The House processes ten to fifteen thousand bills annually and helps enact a large number of public and private laws each year. The House also has the power to elect a President, should the electoral college fail to do so, and the House alone has the power to impeach the President and other high-ranking officials. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Battle of the Bulge - Infantry" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Battle of the Bulge 1944 - Infantry stamp issued December 16, 1994. At 5:30 on the morning of December 16, 1944, secretly-massed German artillery opened fire on the thinly spread American defenders in the Ardennes. Operation "Watch on the Rhine" -- the Third Reich's last desperate gamble to save itself by forcing the Western Allies to make peace -- had begun. When the four-hour bombardment ended, German infantry and tanks, led by SS General Josef Dietrich, began advancing through the woods and hills of the Ardennes. The German advance against the badly outnumbered Americans created a 50-mile "bulge" in the Allied lines. The Americans battled back doggedly, however, and by early January the fight turned against the Germans. By the end of January German forces had been all but destroyed and the "bulge" squeezed out of existence. Image Size: 23.75 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B14874)
