Herrengrund, Gilded winetaste copperbowl with miner figurinesabout 1750Henkelschale/ Weinprobierschale. Um 1750. Kupfer, getrieben, graviert, vergoldet. Achtpassige Schale mit Rankenhenkeln. Innen Reliefdekor mit Blüten. Im Zentrum zwei Bergmannsfiguren mit Spitzhacken auf halbkugeligen Stützen. 13,5 x 14 x 4,8 cm. Herrengrund, Gilded winetaste copperbowl with miner figurinesabout 1750Handle bowl / wine tasting bowl. Around 1750. Copper, embossed, engraved, gilded. Eight-pass bowl with tendril handles. Inside relief decoration with flowers. In the center two miners' figures with pickaxes on hemispherical supports. 13.5 x 14 x 4.8 cm. Engraved on the outside edge: EISEN WAHR ICH. KUPFER BIN ICH/ SILBER TRAG ICH GOLDT BE/ DECKT MICH.The present bowl belongs to the group of Herrengrund joke vessels, which were made between approx. 1635 and approx. 1850 and were popular and valuable early collector's items. In the Slovak town of Herrengrund, copper mining was already verifiable in the medieval period. The secret of the 'transformation of iron to copper' adhered to the vessels produced here, which is documented with inscriptions on many of these vessels. Vessels decorated with little miners like this one are particularly rare.
