There is some chipping to the tip of Winter’s skates and his left great toe, and there are some slight hairline cracks to the scroll below his right foot. EDUARD THEODOR GRÜTZNER (1846 - 1925. Munich, Germany)."Falstaff drinking wine".Oil on canvas.Signed on the back.Good state of preservation. It presents a patch on the back.Measurements: 42 x 31 cm, 61 x 59 cm (frame).Eduard Theodor Ritter von Grützner was a German painter and art teacher. He was especially noted for his genre paintings of monks. He also repeatedly played Falstaff.Grützner was born in 1846 into a noble family in Prussia (now Poland). His father was a prominent member of the church and the local pastor was a frequent visitor to his parents' home. He recognised Eduard's talent and inclination for painting early on. The manager of a ducal country house in the neighbourhood got him the part, and eventually the pastor got him into the Gymnasium (university preparatory school) in his town.In 1864, the pastor took Grützner to Hermann Dyck's public school in Munich for art education, although his stay at the Kunstgewerbeschule with Dyck was short-lived. In the first semester he transferred to the Classical Art class of Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Alexander Ströhuber, where students learned about the aesthetic ideals of antiquity. In 1865, Grützner joined Hermann Anschütz's painting class at the Munich Academy. In the meantime, he also sought advice and inspiration from Carl Theodor von Piloty; he was taken into Piloty's class in 1867. Piloty's class included aspiring artists from Hungary, Greece, Germany, Russia and Poland. After three years under Piloty, Grützner left the academy. In 1870, Grützner moved into his own studio in the garden house at Schwanthalerstraße 18 in Munich. He quickly began to produce many paintings and became a highly successful artist.

A FRENCH EMPIRE ORMOLU AND PATINATED BRONZE FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK, THE DIAL SIGNED FOR LEPAUTE, PARISTHE CASE AND DIAL PROBABLY CIRCA 1810, THE MOVEMENT LATER Fitted with a circular eight-day two train countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension and stamped with ..Japy Fils, Medaille d'argent, 1844 1849 roundel over number 283, the circular white enamel Roman numeral dial inscribed LEPAUTE A PARIS to centre and with blued steel moon hands within a milled bezel, in a case modelled with a patinated bronze figure of Zeus cradling the infant Bacchus stood beside a tree stump adorned with fruiting vines and a crooked staff, the rectangular plinth base applied with mount cast with fine triple fruiting swag decorated baton beneath an urn with serpent handles to fascia, over stylised lotus leaf cast ogee moulded skirt base over rosette and scroll cast bracket feet, (case and dial probably circa 1810, the movement later)50cm (19.75ins) high, 35.5cm (14ins) wide, 16cm (6.25ins) deepThe current lot is cast with Zeus holding his infant son Bacchus (or Dionysus) who was a product of his affair with Semele. Zeus killed Semele by revealing his true form (a bolt of lightning) and Bacchus came forth from Zeus's thigh. Zeus took the infant who, despite being half mortal, was considered a god. Bacchus represented fertility, wine and hedonism and travelled with his followers of Maenads, Satyrs, and the drunken portly Silenus.Condition Report: Dreweatts have not tested the movement and cannot make any guarantees or comments as to accuracy or if the movement is working we suggest getting the clock appraised by a professional clock restorer prior to use. Movement appears to be just about working but is dirty hence a gentle clean/service is required. As catalogued the mechanism is not original to the dial and case hence the winding hole protrude a little further than normal and the left hand is slightly off-centre in the hole. The movement has not been removed from the case to assess how much alteration has been done to the back of the dial to facilitate fitment of the present movement. The dial enamel has some noticeable chipping and scratching around the right hand winding hole and very light chipping to the edge above the I numeral. The case retains original gilding with overall only light wear however the flat side and rear sections have oxidised/discoloured.Clock has pendulum but no winding key. Please see additional images for visual reference to conditionCondition Report Disclaimer
