4th-6th century A.D. An unusual short-necked jug in the shape of a satyr head with pointed ears, short fringe, closed mouth, wide oval eyes, hooked nose, base smooth and flat; two-handled amphora on top of the head, decorative vulva motifs arranged in a single row to the back of the head. Cf. a similar vessel at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Atlanta, inv.no.1996.010.002; cf. Gabler, D. and Marton, A., 'Head-Pots in the Antiquities Collection' in Bulletin du Musee Hongrois des Beaux-Arts, 2008/108-109, pp.43-64, figs.4-5. Exhibited at Knightcott House, Banwell, Somerset, circa 1918-1943. 1.03 kg, 20.5 cm (8 in.). Excavated by Ashmead Pruen, Egypt, circa 1836. Pruen family collection, Somerset, UK. Property of Richard Pruen by direct descent. Accompanied by a handwritten letter from Richard Pruen explaining the circumstances of excavation and family descent. Accompanied by an archaeological expertise by Dr. Raffaele D'Amato. Accompanied by a positive thermoluminescence analysis report, sample no.N122e55 from Oxford Authentication. Satyrs, who expressed the pleasures of Bacchus-Dionysus, are relatively common on ancient head-pots. The Dionysiac mysteries expressed the initiate's hopes for a new life after death, and the oinophoroi (wine-bearers) were part of his everyday life, used for pouring or drinking vessels at symposia, or for washing. The typology appeared in North-Africa from the first half of the 3rd century A.D., and several pieces carried the signatures of their makers. The most famous is Navigius, well known for his biconical jugs and cylindrical potteries, alongside whom we have the officinae of Septus, Tabinas, Olitrensis, Ianuarius and Saturninus. This model represents a simpler type compared with the more detailed 3rd century examples, and could be attributed to a slightly later age. A PAIR OF LATE GEORGIAN SHEFFIELD PLATE WINE BOTTLE COASTERS with scalloped and ribbed leaf cast borders enclosing engraved centres - on hardwood bases. 20.5cm diameter Both are in good undamaged and unrestored condition with no dents. There is some signs of copper coming through the silver plating to the inner bowl.

A GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY BUTLER'S WINE CARRIER with arched cut-out carrying handle and divisions for eight bottles; standing on an inlaid base with tapering square legs and cup casters.45cm squareThe tapered legs have losses to the pieces of timber which go around the feet above the casters. There are small losses to the corners of the bottle rests. The piece has been cleaned and polished on the base.

Belgium/Germany, ca. 1910.Cameo and Orivit blown glass.Pair of decanters for wine service made of blown glass in the manufacture of Val Saint Lambert, in glass with carved vegetal decorations in green and purple. With Orivit silver-plated pewter cases. Orivit was a German metallurgical company that manufactured luxury and everyday Art Nouveau items at the beginning of the 20th century. The product group identified by the name 'Orivit' included 'Stamped and cast luxury and everyday objects made of pewter, copper, brass, white metal or other suitable metal, unwrought, wholly or partially gilded, silvered or also assembled with glass, crystal or porcelain,Marks and numbering on the reverse.Published in "Etains 1900" by Philippe Dahhan, Editions de l'Amateur.Provenance: Spanish private collection, formed between 1970 and 2010. Missing a small pull on one of the covers. Good condition. Normal wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 18.5 cm (height) x 7.5 cm (largest diameter).
