The interior of nashiji with gold fundame edges. The underside with the signatures SHOKASAI (for the lacquer) and SHIBAYAMA (for the inlay) within a mother-of-pearl-inlaid rectangular reserve.HEIGHT 8.2 cmCondition: Good condition with wear, minor age cracks, small losses to lacquer, minor nicks, occasional light scratches, the interior with traces of use and small chips to edges. Provenance: From a private collection in southern Germany, assembled prior to 2007.There are a considerable number of lacquer inro and some manju netsuke that bear this signature. The inro are often lenticular and many are decorated with Shibayama style inlay, such as the present lot. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner Julian Barrow was born in 1939 in Cumberland but spent most of his life in London. Barrow began as a restorer and joined the National Gallery restoration department in London. During his time there he was sent on many trips to complete commissions. Ireland, was a location that made a particular impression on Barrow. He was inspired by the rural scenery and surrounding hills and began to paint the view in his spare time. In 1960, he decided to become a full-time artist, and trained under Pietro Anningoni in Florence. Condition Report: Light surface dirt and possible paint splatters to the canvas surface.
