Gwyneth Johnstone (British, b.1914) Still Life of Apples, Oranges, Onions and Wine Bottles on a Table signed lower left with monogram "GJ" oil on canvas 39 x 46cm Gwyneth Johnstone paints landscapes - golden sun on turquoise seas, rooftops, scenes of the Mediterranean and her home in Norfolk. She has been described by the art critic Terence Mullaly as "a gentle wayward poet of paint … unsullied by fashionable trends … pursuing a highly personal course". Gwyneth Johnstone studied at the Slade School of Art and then under the painter Andre Lhote at his Paris studio. She also attended life classes with Cecil Collins at the Central School of Art in the 1950s. She is the daughter of Augustus John and Norah Brownsword and lives and paints in Norfolk.
