Hanley, Wine & Spirit Merchant, 20 Queen Street, Oxford; together with a Shillingford & Blake Wine & Spirit Merchant, Oxford, one gallon jar, a Bond Wine & Spirit Merchant, Wiveliscombe, Somerset jar and a Grimbly Hughes & Company Ltd Wine Merchants, Oxford stoneware jar (4).
A fine Dutch stipple engraved ‘Newcastle’ Composite stemmed cordial glass, circa 1760, the rounded funnel bowl with two putti standing lightly draped with flowing scarves, one handing a wine glass to the other, symbolising ‘friendship’, a third putto lying on a cloud above, holding a wreath over the heads of the other putti, the bowl supported on a stem with a clear knop, a beaded knop and a plain section with a basal knop, on a circular domed conical foot 17.5cm high The glass is from a series depicting ‘Liberty’, ‘Peace’, ‘Friendship’, ‘Harmony’ and ‘Fatherland’. Whilst there are a number of glasses depicting two cherubs on clouds, it is extremely rare to have three.
A Georgian Scottish silver wine funnel, with rubbed marks for Edinburgh circa 1819, maker IH, of usual form, with reeded borders and stylised floral thumb-piece. Height 13.4cm, 3.5oz The stylised floral thumb-piece, seen to the lower strainer part of this wine funnel, resembles the symbolic Jacobite Rose, decoratively employed to represent the House of Stuart. This motif was discreetly used to support the Jacobite cause and was often accompanied by a rose bud representing the Old and Young Pretenders to the throne.
